Dear Cathedral Parents,
There has recently been a great deal of media attention given to staph infections in athletes. The
following information will hopefully provide information that may help to better understand this
issue.
Staphylococcus aureus (staph) is a type of bacteria that is commonly carried on the skin or
in the noses of healthy people. Approximately 25-30% of the population is colonized with
these bacteria (the bacteria is present, but not causing infection). Skin infections may occur
when the staph bacteria are spread by skin to skin contact or by contact with contaminated
items or surfaces. The bacteria often find openings in the skin such as cuts or scrapes. The
infection can look like a pimple or boil and can become red, painful and swollen or have pus
or other drainage. Some of these infections are mistakenly assumed to be a ―spider bite‖.
Most staph infections are minor and may be easily treated. Treatment for the infection
may include taking an antibiotic or having a doctor drain the infection. MRSA (methicillin) -
resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a type of bacteria that is resistant to some common types
of antibiotics. A doctor must obtain a bacterial culture of the infection to diagnose MRSA.
Preventing the spread of the staph bacteria is best accomplished by practicing good
hygiene. This includes showering after all practices and competitions, frequently washing
your hands and not sharing clothes or towels. Washing practice clothes and drying them in a
hot dryer also helps kill bacteria in clothes. Keeping cuts and scrapes clean and covered also
helps prevent the spread of bacteria.
Athletes can also do their part by reporting skin lesions to appropriate health care
personnel so prompt treatment can be initiated, if necessary. At Cathedral, the proper person
to contact is Mike Hunker, our certified Athletic Trainer. He can be reached at school, at
mhunker@cathedral-irish.org, and at 317/968-7361.
Cathedral has taken a pro-active step to prevent this type of contagious disease. We have
hired a professional cleaning service which is focusing on the rest rooms, locker rooms, sinks,
and any area with much physical contact of students. Coaches have encouraged their students to
take practice clothing home each night to be laundered and not to wear one set for a full week,
which some students have chosen to do in the past. You can help at home by seeing that your
students bring home practice or physical education clothing after one wearing so that it is not
lying in lockers, damp, and susceptible to infections. Our outdoor turf practice field has twice
been disinfected as prescribed by the Turf Manager for the Indianapolis Colts, Mr. Mike Martin.
Additional information on staph infections can be found on the following websites; Center
for Disease Control and Prevention – www.cdc.gov and National Athletic Trainer‘s
Association – www.nata.org

The NCAA Information Night will be held Tuesday November 6th at 7:00 PM in the Student
Life Center. Information regarding the eligibility process for Division I and II athletics along
with recruiting policies will be presented by a representative from the NCAA office. This
program is open to Cathedral parents of all classes.
Open House: Thursday, November 15, 2007
Regarding the parking parent volunteers for Open House – I would suggest that
volunteers be able to work from 4:30 to 9:30 (instead of 5:00). We typically have a big
crowd arriving between 5:00 and 5:30, so the parking volunteers would need to be here,
trained, and ready to go by 5:00.
We have yard signs and are asking for parents to pick one up for their yard from the
Office of Enrollment Management: This year we are using yard signs as one way of
advertising our November 15 Open House. If you have a front yard that gets good traffic,
please help us spread the word about Open House by posting one of our yard signs. Signs
may be picked up in the Office of Enrollment Management (Admissions) near the main
lobby.
We are in need of volunteers to help with parking at the Open House, Thursday,
November 15th. Tom Greer has done a great job of this in the past, but the size of our crowd
calls for more than one parking assistant. This is not valet parking, but merely directing our
guests to where there are still places. For this evening, they would be working from 5:00 –
9:30 p.m. If you can help us during any part of the evening, please contact Tom Greer at
tgreer@cathedral-irish.org or at 317/968-7309.

A coat request from Providence Cristo Rey High School:
―Our students must come to school daily dressed to go out into the business world in
professional wear. The Cathedral family donations will assist many of our students to have
appropriate attire and to feel good about how they present themselves.
As the seasons change, our students will continue to find clothing challenges. Cooler
weather requires professional wear coats, not hoodies, not sports logo jackets, or cartoon
character jackets. We have informed the students that they need to have this clothing by Oct.
31st when they return from their Fall Break. We have a few appropriate jackets for them to
choose from and we are now able to send some of our young ladies to Dress For Success for an
outfit. But if you think it is appropriate to ask the Cathedral Family again for their assistance, we
would be most grateful for dress winter coats. They can be men's or women's and in sizes that
would allow them to wear a suit coat underneath. I realize that few high school students at your
5
school probably have such coats themselves, but perhaps their parents might have a coat that
they are planning to replace and wouldn't mind donating to us.
We also could benefit from leather belts in larger sizes - 38-44.
If you might be aware of Cathedral parents who own or manage apparel businesses, could
you give them my name? We could use their expertise.
At the Service Fair, we had an opportunity to meet many of your students and about 25
upperclassmen offered to tutor our freshmen and sophomores. We are looking forward to their
coming afterschool in the 4:15-5:15 pm time period when our students are in the "Success
Room" and could benefit from peer tutoring.
Again I wish to thank the Cathedral families for their support.‖
Maryellen McGinnis, the school counselor.

Girls Soccer: The Lady Irish soccer team completed its dream season by capturing the IHSAA
State Soccer Title for the first time in school history! In the semi-final match, freshman Sophie
Spenia scored the lone goal, and the defense prevailed in a 1-0 victory over Center Grove at
Kuntz Stadium. In the state final game, the Lady Irish fulfilled their mission by jumping out to
an early 3-0 lead by halftime. Scoring in the first-half flurry for the Irish were Alex Hall, Anna
Parsons, and Natalie Warner. Sophomore Mariah Whitaker scored an unassisted goal early
in the second half to close out the scoring, and the Lady Irish prevailed with a 4-2 victory over
No. 6 Penn to claim the 2007 IHSAA State Title! The defense, anchored by sophomores Katie
Wacker and Jennifer Collins along with junior goalkeeper Erica Maginn, once again played
extremely well! Congratulations to Head Coach Marc Behringer along with Assistants Kevin
Kubacki and Eric Schmidt for leading the team to a 16-3-4 record and a state title! Special
thanks to the seven seniors – Mercedes Gonzalez, Cathy Cohoat, Tori Schopper, Katie
Zupancic, Natalie Warner, Alex Hall, and Colleen McGrath for their leadership and
commitment!
At the conclusion of the final game, the IHSAA Executive Committee presents an award for
mental attitude to an outstanding senior participant in the girls‘ soccer state tournament. The
recipient of this award must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic
ability in soccer. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate sponsor, presents a
$1,000 scholarship to the school in the name of the recipient. The 2007 recipient of the
IHSAA Mental Attitude Award was our very own Katie Zupancic! Congratulations to
Katie on receiving this prestigious honor!

Motorola Coach of the Year
BRIEFLY: The Colts and Motorola have teamed up to recognize an outstanding Indiana High School Coach every year.
This fall, the Indianapolis Colts and Motorola are launching the 2007 Motorola Indiana High School Football Coach of the
Year program. Through this program, Colts fans will be able to log onto www.colts.com to nominate their favorite Indiana
high school football coach to be named the Coach of the Year. Nominations should be based on that coach's commitment to
the team and surrounding community.
The winning coach will be selected in late November and will be recognized at a Colts home game. In addition, his school's
football program will receive a $1,000 award, courtesy of the Colts and Motorola.

Hurling: I just wanted to make you aware that we had a very successful day at Habig Fields in
Westfield yesterday. Over 100 hurlers came out to play from Bloomington, Indy, Purdue,
Cathedral and North Central, playing almost 20 games and participating in our day-long hurling
blitz.
We had 2 Cathedral teams (about 26 players) who acquitted themselves admirably, beating a
team from North Central that have had far more experience of this particular game. Overall,
the kids enjoyed the day, played hard and have committed themselves to coming back again
in the spring/summer, where we hope to enter them in the North American Championships in
July 2008 - (a tournament that involves approx. 100 teams playing more than 200 games,
over a 2 day period).
Additionally, next year, I will be proposing a schedule that sees this type of blitz being
played in August, at Habig Fields, and involving extra teams from Chicago, Akron, St Louis
and Milwaukee, not to mention Carmel, Chatard and Westfield high schools.

I'd like to thank you for the opportunity to introduce this intrinsically Irish game to Cathedral
and hope that the kids' enjoyment of the game warrants your future support for 2008.
I wish Cathedral every success in all their endeavors, both sporting and academic, for the
remainder of 2007/8 school year.
All the best, Ciaran Connery (317/549-5547)
Boy’s Basketball: Reminder: Boy‘s basketball workouts will begin @ 3:30 PM. All boys who
