What are posture problems?
Minor posture problems can be easily corrected but the issue is recognising the problem is there in the
first place. Stiffness, headache, backache, neck ache can indicate a problem with posture. The
commonest cause of problems is poor posture through our daily activities. Other causes can result from a
congenital deformity.
What is Osteitis Pubis?
Osteitis Pubis is very common in sports and is the dreaded injury for footballers. It can be a persistent
injury. The pubic bone is in two halves and they meet at the front of the pelvis in a fibrous joint which
takes a lot of stress and is susceptible to injury. Symptoms are localised and it will be tender and painful
around the area.
What is Chiropractic?
The word 'chiropractic' literally means 'done by the hand' or 'manipulation'. Spinal manipulation was
practised by Hippocrates in the 5th Century BC. Chiropractic as we know it today was developed in 1895
by a Canadian, Daniel D Palmer.
In Chiropractic the body is seen as a machine - it has a mechanical structure, the key being the spine.
Spinal misalignments cause back pain and affect bodily functions. Treatment focuses on joint
manipulation. Some techniques resemble osteopathy.
Although most patients visit chiropractors for headaches, sciatica and back problems, there is a multitude
of other conditions that chiropractors relieve. These include: asthma; muscle, joint and postural problems;
gastrointestinal disorders; fatigue; vision problems; tinnitus; vertigo; sinus problems; allergies; croup; skin
conditions; kidney conditions; irritable bowel; menstrual problems among others.
Dr Smith uses Kinesiology is the diagnostic phases of the therapy and then chiropractic is in the
treatment side of the therapy.
Dr Darrell Smith is a Chiropractor and Applied Kinesiologist and has been practising for 18 years.
Chiropractic will cost between $40-$50 per session. Most funds provide benefits depending on type and
level of cover.

Patient Profile: Luke Toohey
Luke Toohey has Down Syndrome. He was hit by a car and fractured his tibia and fibula but it was some
time later that his mother Marilyn thought something else was not quite right. She felt Luke’s posture had
deteriorated since the accident so she chose to take him to chiropractor Alex Toubol. Alex noticed that
Luke’s spine needed to be realigned because the natural curvature wasn’t there. After seeing Alex the
change in Luke was incredible – he went to bed earlier and slept through the night. He walked properly
and actually had a visible neck shape that he hadn’t had previously. His learning difficulties have
improved also. The teaching staff at his school remarked that his communication had improved but they
didn’t know he was seeing a chiropractor.
It is generally accepted that chiropractors can help sore backs but it is only about 20% of what
chiropractic can do for a patient.
What is Integrated Body Tuning?

a number of different remedial therapies he utilises to restore the bodies mechanical function to its
optimum efficiently.

practising for 33 years.
IBT will cost between $50 and $150 depending on length of the session, some funds provide benefits
depending on the level of cover.
Patient Profile: Martin Grubb
Martin Grubb will tell you how painful it is to suffer from lower abdominal and pelvic inflammation. As a
keen sportsman it has stopped him in his tracks. He’s heard about Integrated Body Tuning and given
regular treatment hasn’t been affective he is hoping for a better outcome.
There was a large list of things Martin couldn’t do because of the injury. Playing hockey was so painful
and the recovery would take close to a week. The pain was 6/10 and during a game it was an
excruciating 10/10. He thought he would have to give up hockey altogether. Sport is a big part of Martin’s
life and to lose that was devastating.
Martin rang Tony and was distressed. Had been trying to fix problem for two years but nothing was
working. To Tony, Martin’s injury was being caused by misalignments in upper foot, ankle and lower leg.
This was altering the angle of the hip rotation so that it was irritating the tendons at the head of the femur
where it joined the hip causing inflammation in the area. Tony said in three treatments he could fix it.
Martin was very sceptical but as the treatments began he was more and more surprised as the results
unfolded before his eyes.
Tony looked at the root causes of Martin’s problem, not the symptoms. Now Martin feels so physically fit
that his life has started again. It is very exciting for him!

Aleisha’s Alternatives: Rolfing
Of all the forces that affect the human body gravity is the most powerful. Rolfing aims to realign the body
so it works with gravity and not against it.
Margo Suber is a rolfing therapist and explains to Aleisha that rolfing gives an increased ease of motion,
a general sense of well being and more vitality. People often report an ease within themselves. Rolfing is
not passive. Pressure is one of the techniques to get the connective tissue to begin to change its state in
some way. Rolfing isn’t designed to treat ailments but is a program to bring about emotional and physical
wellbeing.
Dr Ida Rolph believed that by aligning the body with gravity personal energy can be improved and with
that a healthier mind and body.
Each rolfing session is quite vigorous and one can feel the effects to targeted areas of the body. After ten
rolfing sessions the body becomes realigned with gravity and a person is more aware of how they hold
their body.
