Home Alone (Family Fun Edition)

Funny... And Suprisingly Sentimental
Now and forever a favorite among kids, this 1990 comedy written by John
Hughes (The Breakfast Club) and directed by Chris Columbus (Mrs.
Doubtfire) ushered Macaulay Culkin onto the screen as a troubled 8-year-
old who doesnt comfortably mesh with his large family. Hes forced to grow
a little after being accidentally left behind when his folks and siblings fly off
to Paris. A good-looking boy, Culkin lights up the screen during several
funny sequences, the most famous of which finds him screaming for joy
when he realizes hes unsupervised in his own house. A bit wooden with
dialogue, the then-little stars voice could grate on the nerves (especially in
long, wise-child passages of pure bromide), but he unquestionably carries
the film. Billie Bird and John Candy show up as two of the interesting
strangers Culkins character meets. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are
entertainingly cartoonish as thieves, but the ensuing violence once the little
hero decides to keep them out of his house is over-the-top. --Tom Keogh
I remember I loved this film back when it came out, and I was still relatively
young. I don't think I've seen it since, and I must admit to being a bit
sceptical when I popped it into the player. Still is good as gold, it turned
out! Not sure how much "reviewing" is needed here; has anyone not seen
this film? It is one of the biggest hits ever, and more importantly; it was
made while the US was still a European nation, which the movie really
shows. It is so old there's even a Jewish bad guy, not a blond Eur opean
one! My oh my!
Even though his family is portrayed as somewhat dysfunctional and
strange, it still is a wonderful loving film about the family and what is
important in life. Little Kevin has a bit of a fight with his mom over him
reacting to his supposed "black sheep" status in the extended family. He
says he wishes his family was gone; which *surprise surprise* happens the
next morning, when the family leave for France and incidentally forgets to
bring little eight-year-old Kevin with them in the chaos (they overslept). It is
Christmas, and there's been a lot of burglaries in the neighbourhood, and it
turns out thieves are indeed on the prowl. Kevin arms up, though, and
places traps throughout the entire house, using his imagination to great
effect. All for good comical effect and on the side of it all is the story about
a lonely proud old man which Kevin eventually befriends and gives some
life-changing advice. Not often something brings tears to my eyes, but
there are some wonderful scenes in this film, centring on family and
religion; the most important issues in life.
5 stars and a film for all the family that is still as good as it was when it
came out.
