                    GUIDELINES FOR LIFTING AND LOWERING

1 Basic guideline figures (not limits) for manual handling operations involving lifting
and lowering are given in the figure below. They set out an approximate boundary
within which operations are unlikely to create a risk of injury, sufficient to warrant a
    more detailed assessment.

2 It is assumed that the load can be readily grasped with both hands and that the
operation takes place in reasonable working conditions with the handler in a stable
    body position.

3 The figures take into account the vertical and horizontal position of the hands as they
move the load during the handling operation, as well as the height and reach of the
individual handler. It will be apparent that the capability to lift or lower is reduced
significantly if, for example, the load is held at arm's length or the hand pass above
    shoulder height.

4 There is a wide range of individual physical capability, even among those fit and
healthy enough to be at work. The figures will give reasonable protection to nearly
all (95%) men and two thirds of women. Thus for women the figures should be
    reduced by 33%.

5 The figures should also reduced by:

    (a) 10% for Twisting - 45 degrees
    (b) 20% for Twisting - 90 degrees
    (c) 30% for Repetitive Handling - 2 per minute
    (d) 50% for Repetitive Handling - 5 to 8 per minute
    (e) 80% for Repetitive Handling - 12 per minute
