Sabbath is More Than…
•Taking a nap on Sunday
•A day off work
•Showing up for church
•24 hours with no shopping,
running, swimming or smiling
•An occasion for radical legalism
Sabbath Legalism in the First Century
•Exodus 20:10- “but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it
you shall not do any work…”
•Breaking the Sabbath is very serious business! There were big
consequences for Sabbath breakers!
•What is considered work?
•The religious leaders identified 39 basic categories of “work.”
•Then, they gave specific instruction for what could and could not be done in
each of these 39 categories.
•For example: reaping, threshing, winnowing, preparing a meal and lifting a
burden were all considered work.
•You can’t lift a burden on the Sabbath.
•How much is a burden?
•A burden is anything that weighs more than two dried figs!
•This is legalism out of control!
The Secret of Sabbath
It is a declaration of complete trust that God is
capable of running the universe without your help!
It is a living parable that you are confident God can
provide all you need (in just six days of labor).
It is an awareness that slowing down to
meet with God and his people is a priority
in your life.
