Highlights from Speaker’s Presentation
Three (maybe four!) generations:
Radio Babies – 64 to 75 yrs old
Boomers – 45 to 63 yrs old
Generation X - 31 to 44 yrs old
Generation Y - 15 to 30 yrs old
“Managing the Millennials” – Suggested book
Boomers – Need help with the work/life balance
Gen X and Y – Much better with the work/life balance
Gen Y – Want to have a say on the tools they use at work
2012 to 2014 – Expecting a shortage of workforce, especially in IT due to the
boomers retiring
The business dress for generation Y is very, very different
Stereotypes:
Boomer stereotypes - Selfish, stuck in their ways, slow technology learners, pocket
protectors
Gen Y stereotypes – Lazy, feel entitled, have a casual relationship with time,
impatient
Boomers refer to gen X and Y as “kids”. Have the temptation to “mother” them.
Gen Y says “Ask the old farts”
Gen Y - Loves mentoring – Does not like intimidation.
Gen Y - Not real business-savvy, but want your time to learn.
Gen Y - They love and crave regular feedback
(Doesn’t have to be formal – texting counts!)
Gen Y – Love to be noticed and rewarded
(Grew up with the “trophy for all” thinking with sports etc)

Generation X and Y – Have the most conflicts
X’ers are out to show-the-ropes to the Y’ers, and put them in their place about
things. Boomers are trying to be the peace-makers.
Gen Y - Love pictures, can relate with and understand you more when you include
pictures --- want to know what you are outside of work.
Gen Y - Know that they will be learning all of their life. The faster they can learn, the
more marketable they will be.
What will draw the Gen Y’ers to your company when the boomers start to retire, and
there is a shortage of workforce? You want the sharpest ones, so what can you offer
them?
Mentoring
Technology
Choices
Bonding
Flexibility
Working in teams – collaboration
Generation diversity is just another type of workforce diversity, and we have
precedence with dealing with workforce diversity.
What tools will the boomers use when asked to create a presentation?
Word or PowerPoint
What tools will the Gen Y’ers use?
Podcasts
Does your knowledge tool allow you to post podcasts?
There are 79 million boomers
There are 39 million Gen X’ers
There are 67 million Gen Y’ers

Pair up people from the different generations:
Need a report for the CEO by noon, using a new piece of software?
Pair up a Gen Y’er with a Boomer --- The Y’er will be a whiz at figuring out how to get
out of the new software what you’ll need. The Boomer will have the business savvy
to know what the CEO needs to see, and how it should be presented.
Gen Y:
Safety is a big deal. Job with travel – will want to know what countries? Will I
have a car? Will I have a translator etc?
Green companies are important
Volunteerism is a big thing
What certifications/training does a company support and encourage?
“Some Kind of Monster” – Documentary about Metallica, and how they dealt with
organizational behavior so that their group would not fall apart over time like so many
others.
Good books:
“Who Moved My Cheese”
“Our Iceberg is Melting”
We learned that most companies likely have 3-4 Generations on their Support Teams:
• Gen Y 15-30 yrs old • Gen X 31-44 yrs old • Baby Boomers 45-63 yrs old • Radio
Babies 64-75 yrs old. Our speaker asked some very thought provoking questions -- "So
what are you doing to help them effectively communicate with one another and work as
an effective team? Do you refer to Gen Y as “the kids” and the Radio Babies as the “old
farts”? How’s that working so far? Got some animosities building?" She then shared
some tips to help bridge those 30-40 year age gaps and how to attract and integrate the
GEN Yr’s into our IT Support organization. We also discussed ways to foster their
cutting-edge technical contributions with their high energy and new ideas, while training
them on the fundamentals of business savvy.
