Ancient Olympics!
The first ever Olympic games were held in Olympia, Ancient
Greece. In those times they didn't give out medals or trophies,
instead they gave out Laurel wreaths.
The Laws
• The athletes had to swear an oath in front of the
statue of Zeus that they had been training for 10
months.
The events in the Ancient times are-
Javelin
Boxing
Discus
Horse riding
Jumping
Pentathlon
Pankration

The Rules
Women: The women were forbidden to participate in or even observe
the games. Any woman discovered there could be thrown off a cliff!
The women (young, unmarried ones) competed in a separate series
of foot races called the Heraea, named in honour of Hera, the
queen of the gods.
Water Sports: Despite miles and miles of beautiful coastline, water
sports such as swimming were never a part of the ancient Olympic
Games.
No World Records: No measurements were recorded of the length of a
jump or javelin throw. Likewise, no times were kept for the running
events. Winners' names might be recorded, however.
How Do We Know All This?
• We know this
because people have
written about the
ancient times and the
Olympics.
• People have written
books and uploaded
information on the
computer for other
people to see.
