THE MODEL GLOBAL CITIZEN
Over the past few weeks, we have spent time discussing what it means to be a
global citizen in our world. Now, it is your chance to pick a person who you
believe is an excellent example of a global citizen. It could be an actor, athlete,
politician, scientist, teacher, or any other category of people you can think of!
However, regardless of what category you choose to use, what matters most is
that you believe the person had made positive contributions to our world!
•This project will be divided into two phases: Research and Slide
Construction
The entire project will be due at the end of class on
Monday, October 5
Homework is expected. Use your flash drive to take work home or you can
work during lunch or afterschool!
Phase One: Research
Research dates and suggested homework:
•Thursday, September 17
Project Introduction
Homework: Brainstorm choices for global citizen
•Friday, September 18
Finish brainstorm in class and turn in choice at least 20 minutes
into class-time.
•Monday, September 21-Wednesday, September 23:
Research required information
(Homework: Have research graphic organizer complete by
beginning of class on Thursday, September 24.)
Phase Two: Slide Construction
•Friday, September 25: Slide Instruction/Construction
•Monday, September 28: No School
•Tuesday, September 29: Slide Construction
•Wednesday, September 30: Slide Construction
•Thursday, October 1: Slide Construction
•Friday, October 2: Slide Construction
Monday October 5: FINISHING TOUCHES AND PROJECT
DUE BY THE END OF CLASS
**Homework is expected on any or all nights if necessary to complete the
project on time!
PHASE ONE -- RESEARCH
Required Research Information (Phase One)
**There are five required areas of research for this project and one ‘choice’ area.
1) Personal Information:
•Name of person
•Date of birth and death (if applicable)
2) Background/Biographical Information:
Describe experiences the person had that influenced him/her to pursue
the life/goals he/she had. Some suggested topics are listed below, but
feel free to add topics of your own.
•Family
•Education
•Occupation
•Hardships/Struggles
3) Major accomplishment(s) and/or contributions made to our world:
You must explain how you believe the world is different today (or will be
different in the future) based on this person’s accomplishments. Do not
write a list of accomplishments! You must interpret their meaning!
4) Character Traits:
You must integrate at least 3-4 characteristics that you believe this
person possesses that makes them a global citizen in your eyes and
examples of how this person demonstrates these characteristics…use
the 7 Homeroom Character Traits as your guide. Do not simply redefine
the terms; you must describe how this person exemplifies these traits
within their lives.
5) Lesson:
An explanation of how learning about this person has changed the way
you will view your life or will live your life in the future.
Choice Information
In addition to researching the information listed above, you will be responsible for
one ‘choice’ slide to be included in your PowerPoint. The options for this slide are
listed below.
Choice #1: Find a powerful quote by or about this person that shows how this
person possesses the traits of a model global citizen. In a few sentences, you
must interpret this quote and explain why it is relevant to the person and their life.
Choice #2: Write a Clerihew poem about your global citizen. Integrate
characteristics of this person’s life into the lines of your poem.
PHASE TWO – SLIDE CONSTRUCTION
Slide Construction (Phase Two)
Things to consider:
•Information should be formatted in bullet points, as opposed to long
paragraphs of text.
•Each slide must have a title that cites what information will be found
on that slide.
1) Slide One (Title Slide):
•Your name (First name and last initial only, please)
•Name of global citizen
•Date of birth (and death, if applicable)
•Picture of person
2) Slide Two:
•Background/Biographical Information
3) Slide Three
•Character Traits
4) Slide Four
•Major accomplishments or contributions
5) Slide Five
•Choice Slide (Quote or Clerihew poem)
4) Slide 6:
•Lesson: How learning about this person has changed the way you will
view your life or live your life.
Additional Slide Requirements
Research and basic slide construction are the two most important pieces of this
project. However, should you find you have some extra time you may include the
‘bells and whistles’ of a creative slideshow presentation. Some of the things you
may add are:
•Pictures and graphics
•Backgrounds
•Transitions
•Any other creative element that you can accomplish in a timely manner
**Disclaimer: The ‘bells and whistles’ should be added only after you have
constructed the basic slides with the appropriate research.
