Jorge Quintana : The scientists of the Sandia National Laboratories think that they have a new invention that they
believe could help, but the spokesman of the Water Department says that since the beginning they
have taken precaution measures, it would be impossible to infect the drinkable water.
In a sophisticated security system to alter the current system for drinkable water would be almost
impossible.
Roy Robinson: It would be almost impossible to do it in a timely method.
Jorge Quintana: Roy Robinson from the Albuquerque Water Department explains that it would be complicated to
do in such a short time.
Roy Robinson: Our source is well protected inherently within our system because of using ground water.
Jorge Quintana: The main reason, says Roy Robinson, is because the city of Albuquerque uses a system of under
ground water until it gets used. Also, because of the high security system in wells, like this one.
Roy Robinson: Everything is sealed and secured….
Clifford Ho: Chemicals can diffuse through the system and the sensors can detect it…
Jorge Quintana: But if the water were to become infected, scientists at Sandia Laboratories say they have the
solution. A device that could be submerged in the water to detect the toxic substance, Scientist
Clifford Ho showed News 41 how this invention works.
Clifford Ho: This little membrane over the top prevents liquid water from coming in but it allows the chemicals
to diffuse through the membrane to the sensor where it could be detected.
Jorge Quintana: Ho explains that this device doesn’t allow water to enter, but the sensors can detect toxic
substance.
Clifford Ho: I put it near the sensor, it detects the contaminant of real time and if I take it away the signal goes
down again.
Jorge Quintana: By way of technology in this computer, the scientist explains how they come to find out when this
device detects the substance. It’s a system that promises even more security.
Roy Robinson: Quick and significantly poured in servileness of water quality…
Jorge Quintana: Robinson explains that a device that works fast also promises security and quality.
This device is still not available in the market, but the scientist explain that it promises quick
examination of water at the moment rather than doing it by hand. Also it would save million of
dollars. The spokesman that we talked to says, that in the future, they plan to speak with the
scientist on how they could obtain this device. Liliana…..
