The following is a listing of materials (with topics related to infants and toddlers) that are
available from Planning Region 10 Early Development Network Resource Library. The
materials are housed at Educational Service Unit 10 (ESU 10) in Kearney, NE.
To request materials, contact: Polly at ESU 10 Special Education Department, 76 Plaza

(308) 237-5927. For school district personnel, materials will be sent to the local school via
the ESU 10 Delivery System. Materials may be picked up/returned at the school. Parents

their Services Coordinator or Service Provider(s) for assistance.
Administrator’s Forum: The Nuts and Bolts of Early Childhood (Videotape) A
complimentary copy of this tape was given to each Planning Region Team from the summer
institute.
ADHD and Dealing with Grief (Video) A complimentary copy of this video was given to PRT
10. Presenters on this video are Dr. Cindy Ellis, UNMC and Gay McTate.
A Place to Learn and Grow (Videotapes) This is an early childhood video library consisting
of 8 tapes that were donated by ESU 10. The tapes include: Overview; Child Growth and
Development; Learning Environment; Play; Integrated Curriculum; Assessment; Partnership with
Families; Leadership and Staff Development.
A Step in the Right Direction (Videotape) Two copies are available. These videotapes were
developed and given to the Planning Teams by the NDE and HHS to explain to audiences
statewide what the Early Intervention Act is and how each community can begin a collaborative
effort to create a local early intervention system to assist families of infants and toddlers with
disabilities.
Autism (Video) A complimentary copy of this video was given to PRT 10. Dr. Keith Allen
from UNMC is the presenter.
Babies Can’t Wait (Videotape) This 15 minute video was given to each PRT by the statewide
Early Development Network. It provides an overview.
Bayley Infant Neurodevelopmental Screener (BINS) (Test) This test is designed to identify
infants between the ages of 3 and 24 months who are developmentally delayed or have
neurological impairments. Each of the 6 item sets that comprise the BINS is appropriate for
different developmental ages. The sets contains 11 to 13 items and take approximately 10
minutes to administer.

Basics of Developmentally Appropriate Practice (Book) A complimentary copy of this book
was given to PRT 10. The purpose of this short book is to give readers a brief introduction to the
basics of developmentally appropriate practice, with a focus on children ages 3 to 5.
Blended Practices for Teaching Young Children in Inclusive Settings (Book) A
complimentary copy of this book was given to PRT 10. This book offers help to teachers who
are working in inclusive settings. The intent of this book is to show how practices from both
early childhood special education and early childhood education can be merged in order to
address the complex needs of young children.
Building Blocks for Teaching Preschoolers with Special Needs (Book) A complimentary
copy of this book was given to PRT 10. This is the most comprehensive book available about
providing instruction in early childhood classrooms.
The Challenging Child (Book) This profoundly optimistic book reassures parents that they can
create new parenting patterns based on the child’s characteristics to help the child overcome
behavior problems and develop emotional and intellectual capacities to the fullest.
Clinical Practice Guidelines (Book) This book was put out by the Interdisciplinary Council on
Developmental Learning Disorders. It is a comprehensive, integrated approach to the most
challenging developmental problems.
Coaching Families and Colleagues in Early Childhood (Book) A complimentary copy of this
book was given to PRT 10. This practical guidebook gives early interventionists an innovative
way to support other professionals and families in natural settings using coaching.
Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales Developmental Profile™ (CSBS DP)
(TEST) is an easy-to-use, norm-referenced screening and evaluation tool that helps determine
the communicative competence (use of eye gaze, gestures, sounds, words, understanding, and
play) of children with a functional communication age between 6 months and 24 months
(chronological age from about 6 months to 6 years).
Community Guide for Parenting Education (Guidebook) This Good Beginnings Guide
supports implementation of parenting education best suited to local community needs. It
recognizes that there are no simple or right answers to parenting.
Creative Curriculum for Infants, Toddlers and Two’s Developmental Continuum
Assessment System (Teacher’s Guide) A complimentary copy of this guidebook was given to
PRT 10. This guide introduces the goals and objectives and outlines ongoing assessment for the
Creative Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers.
Creative Curriculum for Preschool (Teacher’s Guide) A complimentary copy of this
guidebook was given to PRT 10. It provides the context for observation and assessment,
strategies for getting started, and instructions for how to use all of the forms and other materials
that are part of the Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum Assessment System.

Preschool Volume I (Book) (Training Guide) A complimentary copy of this book was given
to PRT 10. This resource provides a strong foundation for getting started with The Creative
Curriculum. It begins with tools to help you create a comprehensive staff development plan for
your program.

Cut and Copy Creative Clip Art for Babies (Book) This book is packed with cute artwork to
use for invitations, memos, handouts, flyers, cards, note pads or other public awareness materials.
Day by Day--Raising the Child with Autism/PDD (Videotape) This video presents the lives
of two families with children who carry the diagnosis “autistic” or “pervasive developmental
disorder” (PDD). The purpose of the tape is to give the viewer an intimate experience with what
it’s “really like”.
DEC Recommended Practices in Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education
(Book) This book bridges the gap between current research and practice, offering much-needed
guidance to parents and professionals who work with young children with disabilities.
Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs (Book) A
complimentary copy of this book was given to PRT 10. This NAEYC publication contains the
principles of developmentally appropriate practice an guidelines for making decisions in the
classroom and other settings for young children.
Diabetes (Video) A complimentary copy of this video was given to PRT 10. Dr. Brad Schaefer
from UNMC is one of the presenters.
Difficult Child, The (Book) Stanley Turecki, M.D., author. In this book, Dr.
Turecki, one of the nation’s experts on children and discipline, and himself the father of a once-
difficult child, offers compassionate and practical advice to parents of hard-to-raise children.
Disability is Natural (Videotape) In this provocative and inspirational video created by Kathie
Snow, viewers are exposed to new ways of thinking about people with disabilities. When we
think differently, we’ll act differently: we’ll focus on ensuring children and adults with
disabilities live natural lives as citizens in their communities.

Early Communication Skills for Children with Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and
Professionals by Libby Kumin, Ph.D., CCC-SLP
Early Intervention, Connecting Health, Education and Human Services for Very Young
Children with Disabilities and Their Families, A Procedural Guide for Nebraska
Physicians and Health Providers (Three-ring notebook) This guide, obtained at no cost to
our PRT from the Douglas County Health Department grant, was developed to increase
communication between the Early Intervention Program and health professionals. Included in
the guide are information and recommendations on how to facilitate the process of initiating E.I.
services and strategies to promote coordination of ongoing service needs.
Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R) (Examiner’s Manual) This is a brief
developmental screening instrument that is individually administered to children from 3-6. It is
designed to identify children who may need special education services in order to perform
successfully in school.
Educating Children with Autism (Book) A complimentary copy of this book was given to
PRT 10 by the NE Autism Network. This book, by the National Research Council, outlines an
interdisciplinary approach to education for children with autism. Recommendations are offered
for choosing educational content and strategies; examines fundamental issues of ASD.
Educating the Child with Cancer: A Guide for Parents and Teachers (Book) A
complimentary copy of this guidebook was given to PRT 10 by the Candlelighters Childhood
Cancer Foundation. This book was developed to help families and teachers cope with all aspects
of educating the child with cancer.
Embracing Play – Teaching your child with Autism (Videotape) In this 47 minute video,
parents discuss the importance of play in reaching their child with autism and the rewards that
follow. Professionals and parents demonstrate strategies for creating the structure necessary to
foster your child’s play skills.
Fire Spitters (Book) A complimentary copy of this book was given to PRT 10 by Dawna
Sigurdson, ESU 10 CRASDT coordinator. It is a workbook for parents and others who want to
successfully deal with a difficult and angry child. It was written by Gary Benton.
First Connections with Families (Booklet) A complimentary copy of this booklet was given to
PRT 10. This booklet, from the NDE, contains information about child development, reading to
your child, and child health and safety.
First Signs: On the Spectrum—Children and Autism (Video) This video is about early
identification of children who may be on the autism spectrum. It is ideal for physician and
medical practioner training.
FirstSTEP (Screening Test) This is an individually administered screening test designed to
identify young children (ages 2.9 to 6.2 years ) who may have mild to severe school-related
problems. The purpose of FirstSTEP is to screen for the presence of developmental delays in
each of the five domains mandated by IDEA.

First Steps...Supporting Early Language Development (Videotape) This is a free 15 minute
preview of a video-based training kit.
From the Beginning (Video) With the information from this video, produced by ABC News,
parents will have new insight into the development of their child’s brain.
Gateways to Early Literacy (Videos) This four half-hour video series explores the critical
ways families, family service providers, and child care providers can enrich and support
children’s early language and literacy development.
Hablando…nos entendemos los dos (Book) This is the Spanish version of “It Takes Two to
Talk” from the Hanen Centre.
The Hanen Centre ―The Hanen Teaching Tape‖ (Videotape) This videotape demonstrates
how parents can facilitate language learning in positive, natural interactions with their children.
It includes 5 modules . Each module runs approx. 20 minutes. It focuses on initial language
acquisition in the pre-language and emerging language child. It is a good tool for speech-
language pathologists to help in parent training.
I Am Your Child--The First Years Last Forever (Videotape) This videotape is hosted by Rob
Reinter and was also broadcast via television. This video includes information on: bonding and
attachment; communication; health and nutrition; discipline; self-esteem; child care; self-
awareness.
IDEA Requirements for Preschoolers with Disabilities (Booklet) This publication is an
excerpt from the IDEA Early Childhood Policy and Practice Guide
IDEA Nebraska Part C: State Performance Plan 2005-06 through 2010-2011 This
publication is in response to federal Offcie of Special Education Programs (OSEP) requirements.
IDT: Inventario Para La Deteccion Temprana (Revisado) (Spanish version of the ESI-R)
This is the Spanish version of the Early Screening Inventory-Revised. It is a brief developmental
screening instrument that is individually administered to children from 3-6. It is designed to
identify children who may need special education services in order to perform successfully in
school.
Infant-Toddler Intervention (Journals) Louis Rossetti, Ph. D., Editor. The four journals
(published quarterly) provide planning team members with information that will enhance the
clinical services they provide to infants and toddlers who are at-risk or have disabilities and their
families. Articles are written by clinicians from all relevant disciplines.
Introduction to Children with Special Health Care Needs and Genetic Disorders (Video) A
complimentary copy of this video was given to PRT 10. Dr. Brad Schaefer from UNMC is the

It Takes Two To Talk (Book) Ayala Manolson, author. This is a book about how “real”
people and “real” children make the connections that lead to communication, learning, and
positive relationships. It is comprehensive, enjoyable, and family “friendly. The professional
jargon has been virtually eliminated. This book offers parents and care givers an easy and
effective way to encourage the child's curiosity, creativity, and self expression within the
conversations of play and daily routines.

Journey of a Lifetime....Beginning With the End in Mind (video) This video, by the Karen
Gaffney Foundation, will instill hope for a full and productive life in the hearts and minds of new
parents of a child born with Down syndrome. The hour long video is also a valuable tool for
family members, close friends, doctors, teachers, and other professionals who are providing
information and support to parents at this critical time.
Kids with Special Needs: Focus of Nebraska ETV and NPRN (Video) A complimentary
copy of this video was given to PRT 10. This video, from March 2004, features three programs
with a total time of 3 hours.
Learning from Children (Book) A complimentary copy of this book was given to PRT 10 by
the Kearney author, Paul Welter. This book is a collection of stories from adults who have
gained much insight by observing children and learning from them.
Learning Language and Loving It (Book) This book, by the Hanen Centre in Canada, helps
make language learning a natural part of everyday conversation, play activities, and daily routines
in any early childhood or child care setting. This innovative program addresses ways to facilitate
children’s social and language development, peer interaction, pretend play, and emergent
literacy. It is particularly helpful in addressing the needs of children with language delays,
special needs, or those learning a second language.
Living with a Brother or Sister with Special Needs--A Book For Sibs This book,
complements of Region III Developmental Disability Council, focuses on the intensity of
emotions that brothers or sisters experience when they have a sibling with special needs and the
hard questions they ask.

More Than Playing Around (CD and Manual) This is an interactional learning tool that
provides information about the development of play in children. The program includes a CD
ROM, which contains video segments demonstrating the stages of play in children aged 3 months
to 4 years, and the manual which provides background information describing play and designing
educational programs for children.
More Than Words (Book) This book, by the Hanen Centre in Canada, is a guidebook for
parents of children with autism spectrum disorder. It contains extensive, practical information
for parents in the familiar, user-friendly Hanen format, featuring many wonderful illustrations.
This book contains an in-depth description of strategies drawn from current research, which are
known to help children with autism develop more advanced communication skills. The
strategies are placed within a framework of helping children learn within everyday activities,
conversation, and routines.
Natural Environments: Linking to the Community (video and handout) This video and
accompanying guide were provided by a national teleconference May 21, 1998.
Natural Environments Part 2: Implementation in the Community (video and handout)
This video and accompanying guide were provided by a national teleconference November 12,
1998.
Nebraska Early Intervention Team Resources Guide (Three-ring notebook) This guide,
obtained at no cost to our PRT from the Co-Lead Agencies (NDE and NHHSS), provides: an
overview of the early intervention structure, program and activities; serves as an
orientation/training/reference resource for NICC and PRT members; and is a team directory.
Nebraska Early Learning Guidelines for Ages Birth-3 (Spiral Bound Book) This guidebook
is a complimentary copy from NDE. These voluntary guidelines are a resource for those who
care for infants and toddlers. It serves as a companion to the Nebraska Early Learning
Guidelines for Ages 3 to 5 published in January 2005.
Nebraska Early Learning Guidelines for Ages 3-5 (Spiral Bound Book) This guidebook is a
complimentary copy from NDE. These voluntary guidelines are in response to President Bush’s
early childhood initiative to strengthen Head Start, partner with states to improve early childhood
education, and provide information to early childhood teachers, caregivers, and parents.
The Nebraska Newborn Screening Program Report (Booklet) This report explains
significant changes during 2002 and 2003 that occurred to Nebraska’s newborn screening system.
Nuestras Familias (Video) This video, in Spanish, was given to Planning Region 10 for
Spanish speaking families.
One of Us—Access and Equality for all Young Children (Book) This small book was
provided to PRT 10 as a complimentary copy. The purpose of the guidebook is to help
communities establish a vision for inclusive early childhood practice and provide ideas for how
to proceed.

Parent Pages (English Version—Newsletter), A unique newsletter that allows you to add your
personal touches to a professional format. There are twelve monthly issues containing four
master pages that you may copy for families. There are feature articles, parent involvement
ideas, opportunities to communicate to parents through announcements, etc., and a parent
resource section.

designed for evaluating the speech and language of young children.
Raising Your Spirited Child (Book) Mary Sheedy Kurcinka, author. A guide for parents
whose child is MORE: intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and/or energetic. This book
offers parents support and strategies in parenting the spirited child-often called “difficult” or
“strong-willed”.
Resource Guide Selected Early Childhood/Early Intervention Training Materials
(Reference Manual) This manual was provided to the team by Susan Kringle. The resource
guide identifies and describes resources that will assist us in designing quality inservices. It
contains such listings as: free publications, videotapes, bibliographies, and discussion guides.
Results Matter Child Assessment (Video) This complimentary video is a November 2005
presentation by Barbara Jackson with Munroe-Meyer Institute and UNMC.
The Role of Experience on the Developing Brain (CD) This complimentary CD from Project
Learn is an interactive presentation from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and
Munroe-Meyer Institute.
Sibshops..Workshops for Siblings of Children with Special Needs (Book) This user friendly
guide explains how to plan a Sibshop from scratch.
The Sleep Fairy (Children’s Book) This children’s book, written by Janie and Roger Peterson,
of the Omaha “BeHaven Center” was written for parents to help with bedtime. Janie and Roger
are known for their “Whine to Roses” trainings.
Smith’s Recognizable Patterns of Human Malformation (Book) This text may be of value in
the recognition, management, and counseling of particular problems and patterns in syndromes.
Stedman’s Medical Dictionary (Book) This 27th edition continues a long tradition of providing
a comprehensive, current, and accurate medical glossary to professionals.
Successfully Parenting Your Baby With Special Needs Early Intervention for ages Birth to
Three (Video) This video is designed to give parents hope and support through enlightening
them to the wonderful benefits of Early Intervention.
TalkAbility (Book) By Fern Sussman of the Hanen Program. This is a much-needed resource
for parents of verbal children on the autism spectrum, as well as to the professionals who support
them. This book is for parents and caregivers of young children who have difficulty interacting
with others. The ideas in this book are useful for children between the ages of 3 and 7. Some of
the children may have the diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome or High Functioning Autism. Others

may have no diagnosis at all. TalkAbility offers a simple approach to helping your child develop
better social skills so he or she can have conversations and make friends more easily. This book
will also help you find the best ways to interact with your child. It’s about giving your child new
opportunities to learn by doing—by socializing with you in everyday situations.
Toddlers—Love and Logic Parenting for Early Childhood (2 Audiotapes) Jim Fay and
Foster Cline show you how to use their unique Love and Logic approach to effectively work with
your toddler’s problem behavior. These practical and loving methods not only apply to the very
young child, but to four and five year olds as well.
Uncommon Fathers--Reflections on Raising a Child with a Disability (Book) This is a
compelling collection of essays by fathers who were asked to reflect and write about the life-
altering experience of having a child with a disability.
Understanding Children…The Guidebook for Children 0-3 (Book) This complimentary
copy is for parents, grandparents, health professionals, and all other caregivers of young children
encouraging clear conversations that lead to understanding children. This book identifies
questions, clarifies answers, advises on action and expands sources through other books, the
internet, and helpful contacts.
Usted Hace La Difencia (Book) ―You Make the Difference in Helping Your Child Learn‖
This book, written in Spanish, is from the Hanen Centre. It is designed for parents of all young
children, especially those who are at-risk for developing a language delay. The principles of the
Hanen approach are captured in this condensed, user-friendly book. The simple language,
colorful illustrations and humorous cartoons help parents learn how to connect with their
children in ways that foster the child's self-esteem and learning. The style of the book makes it
especially useful for parents with low literacy skills and those who have other first languages.
Views from our Shoes (Book) This book, complements of Region III Developmental
Disability Council, clearly speaks to siblings of children with special needs, letting them know
that they are not alone. On the pages of this book, you will find the thoughts of 45 brothers and
sisters, ranging in age from 4-18. Their siblings have many different types of special needs
including: autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, health problems, ADHD, Down
Syndrome and other syndromes.
What Everyone Can do to Prevent Child Abuse (Resource Packet) This packet of
information was provided to each Planning Region Team from the Early Childhood Training
Center. The material contains strategies we as child advocates can use to build strong
communities in which families and children as supported and valued.
When Slow is Fast Enough (Book) Joan F. Goodman, author. This book supports the child’s
natural and spontaneous development to stimulate individual processes of discovery and self-
expression.
Young Exceptional Children Monograph Series 1, 2, 5, and 6 (Booklets) These booklets are
complimentary copies.
