COUNTDOWN TO THE NEW TRANSLATION OF
THE ROMAN MISSAL Advent -minus-1 – 11/20/11
Our year-long preparation for the new English translation of
the Roman Missal comes to a close as we celebrate the great
solemnity of Christ the King. Along with that preparation, our
year-long ―visit‖ with the Gospel of Matthew leads us to gather
at the throne of the King with all the nations and peoples and
tribes and tongues of every time and place.
What a wonderful ―God-incidence‖ of preparation and feast to
help us realize something of ultimate importance about our
baptismal calling and our Eucharistic liturgy: each and every
Eucharist we celebrate is a sharing in the mission of our King to
reconcile the world to the Father, to promote the justice of the
Kingdom, to bring all humankind into unity with Christ, to do
this by recognizing him in the brothers and sisters whom the
world considers to be the ―least.‖
Think about it: our world is marred by so much division, strife
and ―dis-cord‖ (literally, ―brokenness of heart‖). Our liturgy
thus becomes profoundly counter-cultural: a moment in which
we step outside the temporal world’s brokenness to experience
a taste of eternity’s unity in Christ. We willingly set aside and
―die‖ to our individualities and preferences to ―rise‖ to a new
reality. Our liturgy becomes a living icon of our constant and
confident hope: all creation made one in praise and
thanksgiving to the Father, through Christ, in the unity of the
Spirit.
Let us never mistake our concerns about the new words or
gestures or postures for an exercise of choreography: in Christ
our King, our oneness in mind, heart and voice is infinitely
more.
