Overview:
The purposed of this activity is to take knowledge from chapter 6 in our text book and apply it by developing a
CD cover and songs dealing with the daily lives of Indians, slaves, or colonists.
Procedure:
1. Review lifestyles of slaves, Indians, and colonists orally with class. Talk about the differences of their
lifestyle with that of ours.
2. Have students draw out of a hat which group they will be responsible for with the project.
3. Pass out rubric and explanation sheet. Discuss with the students about their responsibility for the
project.
4. Students will start to develop a CD cover and 6-10 songs about the daily lives of the slaves, Indians, or
colonists (which ever group they picked out of the hat).
5. Students may use the Internet to access pictures to develop their front and back covers.
6. Each student needs to cut the blank paper to the measurements of 4 ½ by 4 ½ so it will fit into the CD
cover.
7. The CD cover and back must be colored. Song titles must be original titles about the daily life of the
colonists.
8. Song titles will be on back of CD cover
9. Place completed cover and songs in the blank CD case.
10. Each student will present their CD cover and songs to the class at the last 30 minutes of Day 2.
Materials:
Blank piece of white paper
Blank CD case – 1 per student (student provided)
Computers with internet access
History book
Colored pencils/ markers
Ruler
Instructional Activities:
Students will use their prior knowledge from reading chapter 6 to develop their CD cover. Each student’s
creativity will show through his or her individual CD cover and songs.
Students will be able to take a historical topic and relate it to something of interest to them (CD’s).
Interventions:
Students who need additional time or help coming up with ideas may be partnered up with others if needed.
Extensions:
Students who finish early may develop song lyrics for their songs as an additional assignment.
Reflections:
th
In creating this lesson, I tried to come up with an idea to make history relevant to an 8 graders daily
life.
During the lesson, I hope the students come up with unique song titles and use their creativity to the best
of their ability.
After teaching the lesson, I will make changes necessary.
