Dark Lover (Black Dagger
Brotherhood, Book 1) by J.R. Ward
A Vampire Love Story For The Big Girls!
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, theres a deadly turf war
going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band
of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet
none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black
Dagger Brotherhood.
The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with
the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his
most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of
his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the
undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.
So, here's the book that started it all, and it doesn't disappoint. JR Ward is
wildly creative with her vampire world, and it's entirely possible to overlook
some of the more ridiculous aspects (the names! Good God, the names!!!)
because this is such a great ride.
Wrath is the blind vampire king, and he must track down and care for Beth,
a woman who has no idea she's about to go through the transformation
that will make her a vampire. The story is complex, with many characters
and a lot of world-building to absorb, but it was done in such an interesting,
solid way that I never became annoyed with it. I really, really, liked this
entry to the series, and though nobody is quite as horribly tortured as they
become in later books, I think this makes for a much better, more
compelling, action-driven story.
However, I'm not sure that the first thing I'd do when the biggest man I've
ever seen breaks into my apartment is have sex with him before even
knowing his name...but then I'm not Beth. Hey, maybe Wrath is that
compelling...who can say? There are probably better ways to throw your
hero and heroine together, but then I didn't really mind that much...
I liked Wrath, and I liked Beth. I loved their relationship. I did NOT like the
fact Wrath was a complete bastard to Marissa, the mate he can't wait to
discard for no particular reason. But even as the poor woman is painted as
a weakling here, she's already showing signs of an inner strength, of a
determination to make something more of her existence, an evolution that
continues through the series.
This book is great fun. Big tough men, leather, fighting, bad guys out to
eliminate an entire race, a completely original take on vampirism, a saga
that isn't ending any time soon. You have to go with the flow and pretend
characters don't have names like Vishous and Mr X and you'll enjoy this
very much. The first four books of this series are fantastic paranormal
romance set in a complex world. After that the series takes a very different
turn - beware and tread with caution.
