Time Limit: 3 to 4 minutes
Objective: In a 3 to 4 minute speech, demonstrate to the class how to do something, how to make
something, or how something works.
Requirements: This speech should follow the guidelines of the organizational model (intro,
body, conclusion). It is also very important that your main points follow a specific "time-
sequence order” (step one, two, three). Refer to chapter 8- Organizing the body of your speech
and the section on chronological order (p. 178) for assistance in this area. Because this is a
demonstration speech it is important to have the skills, knowledge, and capability of your
topic/subject. In other words, you must establish expertise. The more you know about your
topic the easier it will be to demonstrate. Also, some of the speeches will require the use of
materials to perform your task so remember to handle your materials properly. In addition,
remember to keep the speech short and simple because you only have a 3 to 4 minute time limit.
Finally, an outline including the general purpose, specific purpose, central idea/thesis statement,
and body of your speech must be turned-in to me on your speaking day (refer to ch. 10).
Visual aids and other materials may be necessary for demonstration purposes.
