I have a part-time gig as a screenplay story analyst (yeah yeah, so LA) and

I could see that even this small side biz was going to melt into the new age

of electronics. As a reader for an annual international script competition, it

was clear that more and more submissions would be electronic rather than

on paper. Last year it was about 70% electronic vs 30% not. I chose to be

one of the readers who only took electronic submission (PDF files) - it

seemed a move in the progressive direction: - A) I wouldn't have to lug

scripts around anymore and B) a new FTP site to load up my scores and

notes made having it all on my laptop totally convenient.... NOT! I found

my eyes took a beating by reading in volume on my laptop. Sure, you can

adjust the font size, but the blari ng light in my eyes was awful. Like most

everyone out there with an office job I am in front of computer monitor 8

hours a day - so it's a joy to come home to read a book or magazine and

during the season - scripts. During the competition's height I read up to 24

scripts a week. When reading off my laptop I managed barely 12 a week

and cut my earnings in half... and used some of that to pay for the expense

of new reading glasses!

The director of the competition had been recommending investing in

electronic readers as he knew that by 2010 100% of the submissions

would be electronic. So I was hemming and hawing on buying a Kindle in

2009 when low and behold - Amazon announced the DX which, by the

way, was FINALLY Adobe friendly! The scripts I receive can n ow be easily

loaded into a Kindle DX and keep their original formatting. Also, the larger

size Kindle also helped for viewing whole pages in the original font size. So

I saved up all my Amazon gift certificates (always on my b-day and xmas

wish lists) and purchased a DX. For the purposes of reading my scripts I

am not disappointed AT ALL! In the proper light (with my reading glasses

on) - I am reading these scripts easily and fast - just like they were on

paper. This is why I didn't hold out too much hope for the flashy iPad to

come out. I am a long-time Apple customer (iPhone, iPod and laptop) - but

regardless of the iPad's adjustable backlight for the book reading, and the

fancy design and color pages... I know that Kindle was still the right reader

for me and the iPad would not be a necessary or wise purchase (not even

sure if it is Adobe friendly). The e-ink is genius!

I like reading books, and enjoy holding it in my hand the old fashioned way.

But I am not opposed to purchasing or reading books on my Kindle. The

selection of books (which I am hoping continues to expand) and the instant

access is just a fantastic perk for me! I do not plan on upgrading my

reader for a while - but when I do I know that it'll most likely be a future

generation Kindle. Thank you Amazon!
