Features:
The more I learned about this extraordinary man, the more I wanted to
meet him, says Jane Goodall in her foreword to the Young Readers Edition
of THREE CUPS OF TEA, the story of author Greg Mortensons struggle to
dedicate his every resource to building schools for poor children in
Pakistan and Afghanistan. His original memoir of the same name has
found a happy and widespread audience; this adapted version, written by
childrens book author Sarah Thomson, offers a glimpse of hope and
promise made good in places where these values often go unseen for
most of their history.
In 1993, Mortenson sets out to conquer K2, the highest elevation of Mount
Everest, in honor of his younger sister, a free spirit who had died at a very
young age. With her amber beads in hand, he plans to deliver them to this
natural zenith and, in doing so, discover his purpose in life. However,
weather and other assailants are unremitting, and he finds himself adrift in
a glacial wonderland, running out of food, fuel and hope. At what can only
be considered a fateful impasse, he runs across a man who leads him to a
village where he is cared for until he is able to return to his normal life.
However, the things Mortenson sees there infect his psyche and soul
forever, namely children in harsh climates being unable to gather under
one solid roof for some literacy. He vows to return one day and build them
a school. Over 15 years later, he has built more than 60 schools and
considers his lifes work to be a pursuance of peace and literacy that he
enacts one child at a time.
THREE CUPS OF TEA is a story of gigantic proportions, scaled down for
grade schoolers, who will appreciate both the adventurous spirit and the
brave heart and unrelenting hard work that Mortenson has had to pull
together in order to make these dreams a reality. Regardless of death
threats and other obstacles, he has continued to do his good work, one
school at a time, and the book is a testament to this ongoing humanitarian
effort.
The three cups of tea of the title refer to the three cups of bitter but
lifegiving tea that his savior made him drink as Mortenson was led out of
the dangerous clime and back into civilization. Those cups made him
realize how a simple gesture could save a life, and he has spent the years
since acknowledging and reflecting that kind act again and again with his
work. The Young Readers Edition also contains an interview with
Mortensons 12-year-old daughter Amira, who has traveled extensively with
her dad, adding just the right touch of personal preteen perspective to the
story.
Like Anne Frank or Albert Schweitzer, thoughtful beings with a propensity
for seeing the light amidst the darkness of human experience, Mortenson
offers his hopeful and exciting story in a heartfelt homage to the breadth
and depth of one hearts journey to bring joy to others.
