St. Anger by Metallica
Give This Album A Try, You Might Change Your Mind.
Never underestimate the regenerative powers of Metallica. Following the
stripped-down Load and Re-Load, theyve returned to the raw, vitriolic
savagery of their earlier canon, using 1984s Ride the Lightning as a
template for St. Anger. The title track provides the psychic lynchpin of the
album by combining the bombast and defiance of the bands earliest high-
water marks with more deliberate lyrics and emotional nakedness. Equally
cathartic is Some Kind of Monster, a lumbering beast of a song that
declares, This is the voice of silence no more. Despite tha t claim, theres an
economy to these lyrics; James Hetfields raw-toothed growl only
occasionally punctuates the menacing soundscapes. In fact, Dirty
Windows, the standout track here, is a shimmering five-minute
instrumental thats free of the baroque trappings that sometimes clutter the
Metallica landscape. --Jaan Uhelszki
This is not an album for the die-hard, white knuckle, über conservative
moron that most metallica fans seem to be. This album is full of honest,
naked emotion, and showcases one of the worlds best metal bands
recovering from the very edge of complete and total breakdown. James
Hetfield delivers a sobering level of realism in the lyrics (granted he didnt
dictate every word so bear in mind that some of the lyrics are very different
from Creeping Death and Master of Puppets) This album is perfect for
anyone who knows what being angry feels like. The album lacks an ultra
produced sound so it feels more raw and aggressive. And Bob Rock plays
bass on the album which sadly makes no difference because Jasons
beautiful bass tones were often buried in the mix anyway(so the 80s metal
fan will find no suprises there!). St. Anger does however showcase an odd
and albeit annoying snare drum sound. That along with the marathon like
running time of each song are my only complaints. Again, if youve got
anger and frustration in your life, then this album should be appealing.
Just keep an open mind.
