Dear Editor,

Don’t you just hate the PRESS Mexico

is getting??

Here I am in Calgary getting oil

changed and in today’s edition of the

Sun ...... 3 articles!!

Is Air Transat simply ‘blaming’ Mexico

for Passport issue?? “Man Up” and

take the blame!!

Funny ... today on CTV, a recent poll

shows only 40% of Quebecers say they

are from Canada; 60% say Quebec

only.

Has Quebec really increased its

presence in PV over the past few

years??

Dear Editor,

I thought most Quebec travelers

stopped at Florida? Thanks to Alfredo Ocaranza Z. and the Thanks to all the locals at Marina

A fresh beginning to a new year, with unlimited possibilities ahead – if we are

willing to be open to them and able to recognize them.

Did you make New Years’ Resolutions? I always did when I was younger and

didn’t realize just how tough some patterns are to break. And, truth be told, in my

heart of hearts I often simply was not willing to make the necessary effort.

But, as the years whiz by and I slowly come to terms with the fact that this life is

not infinite, I become increasingly willing to commit to living a life that suits me.

That timeworn and sometimes irritating expression, “If I only knew then what I

know now,” finally making sense.

There are so many things I would like to add to this paper or to change. But after

27 months, I have to accept there are limits to what I can accomplish as managing

editor. But within the framework I am given, I will continue to do all I can to

support our English-speaking readers, whether in these pages, on my Vallarta

Tribune facebook page, or perhaps even handing out flyers to support clients and

worthy causes. After all, I chose to live in Puerto Vallarta because I love it, and

because my work permits me to not only make a living, but to be of service and

an integral part of the community.

What more could I ask for?

Well, I can ask for help in supporting this incredible destination! I welcome your

suggestions and am always looking for interesting and reliable contributors.

There is so very much going on around the bay and not enough time in the day

for Ana Luz or myself to find out about it all, never mind report on it, Which is

why it would be so helpful to have correspondents in places like Punta de Mita,

Sayulita, San Pancho, La Cruz and so on. And it’s not like you need to be a long-

time resident to contribute! Sometimes the most enlightening info comes from

those who have not lived here long enough to start taking things for granted.

On that note, please do what you can to ensure our fabulous public library remains

open. It offers both the English- and Spanish-speaking communities so much

in the way of not only excellent reading material, but classes, courses, movies,

art exhibitions, recitals, performances and so much more. The reason increased

support has been requested for Los Mangos over the past couple of years is because

the City stopped its monthly payments, making the library entirely dependent on

community support.

The annual fundraiser coming up January 28 is a must-do, not only because

you can get incredible deals at the art auction that evening, but there will be

entertainment, good food and drink, and you will be supporting an excellent

cause. More details will be provided in an upcoming issue, but now might be the

time to mark the date in your calendar.

pottery.

Three years later he began his quest to

make pottery the way it had been done

by the ancient peoples of Paquimé. In

1971 after 15 years of observations,

experimentation, trial and error, Juan

succeeded. He had recreated the

whole pottery making process: from

mining, treating and forming the clay

to decorating and firing the pots.

Then he shared what he had learned to

his brothers and sisters. In time, other

family members and friends learned

how to produce the pottery and made

their own artistic contributions.

TURNING POINT

In 1976, Spencer MacCallum, a social

anthropologist, found three intriguing

unsigned pots in a little store in

Deming, New Mexico. He searched for

and found their maker, Juan Quezada.

Spencer sponsored Juan and promoted

his works and those of his family

members and friends.

THE CREATION OF A PIECE OF

ART

The potters do everything themselves

from finding different clay deposits,

digging and processing the clay,

making their own paints and tools,

and forming, decorating, and firing

the pots. Mata Ortiz artists do not use

potters´ wheels or kilns.

First, they press into a plaster mold

a tortilla of clay to shape and support

the bottom. Then they pinch a clay

sausage to and around the edge of the

tortilla. To form the pot, the potters

continually turn, pinch, and pull the

clay of the sausage to give the pot its

desired shape. As they form the pot,

the potters smooth and compress the

clay by scraping it with the back of a

hacksaw blade or similar tool.
