GENERAL READING

Muye Dobo Tongji (Hardcover) - $24.95

The Comprehensive Illustrated Manual of Martial Arts of Ancient Korea

Translated by Sang H. Kim

In 1789, King Chongjo, ruler of the Yi dynasty, ordered General Yi Duk-moo to compile an official textbook on all martial art

forms present in Korea. The result, the Muye Dobo Tongji, is the only surviving classical text on the Korean arts of war. Based

on the earliest known Korean martial arts treatise, the Muye Chebo (1599), the Muye Dobo Tongji clearly shows the influence

of neighboring Japanese and Chinese armies.

Through hundreds of wars and invasions, Korean soldiers adapted battlefield skills and tactics from their enemies, creating a

unique system. Organized into 24 disciplines comprised of empty hand fighting, weaponry and horsemanship, this is an

accurate historical snapshot of the warrior arts of the late 18th century. This marks the first time this volume is available in

English. Carefully translated from the original text and illustrated with reproductions of ancient woodblock carvings, this book

provides fascinating insights into Korea's martial arts legacy.

The Art of Zen Sword: The History of Shim Gum Do Part One- $~200

Shim Gum Do meaning mind sword path was 'realized' by the Buddhist monk Kim Chang-Sik at the age of 21. His

enlightenment experience occurred during a 100 day retreat at Mount Sam Gak near Seoul in 1965. He found 330 sword

forms, 330 empty hand techniques, 50 long stick forms, 50 forms for two swords and self defense techniques. Each sword

form comprises 40-60 techniques. In 1971 he proclaimed the art of Shim Gumdo in Korea, and in 1974 he moved to the USA.

His second enlightenment was his observation that people already have the sword way and that instruction uncovers what is

already there. This resonates with Takuan's writings on the attainment of the 'Sword Taia' - an uncreated mysterious ability

with which all men are equipped and is perfectly complete.

For Gumdo practitioners it is interesting to note that Kim Chang-Sik instructed both Kim Jeong-Ho and Na Han-Il (the

originators of Haidong Gumdo and Haedong Kumdo) and both are listed in the book as completing instruction in Korea. Both

worked together under the Shim Gumdo banner before formalizing Haidong Gumdo and Haedong Kumdo

The book is not an instruction manual of sword methods but provides an historical perspective on the background to the birth

of the art and its Buddhist precepts. It includes a remarkable account of Kim Chang-Sik's sparring with a Japanese Kendo

Master in Osaka in 1971.
