Transition to Annie: In addition to medications and protery, children being orphaned by
parents is another major challenge to the Kenyans.
I. Introduction-
Every 14 Seconds a child is orphaned in Kenya. So at the end of class today there
will be 514 children are going to be orphaned at the end of class here today. 95% of the
Aids orphans live in Africa. There are now about million orphans in Kenya right now
and about 13 million in Africa. With the outstanding number of orphans we are plagued
to wonder who is taking in these children. The Government? Extended family? The
Community?
No one is the answer! If the children are lucky they have someone who will take them in,
but unfortunately not many of them have this option.
Transition: So who are these children?
II. Here is a video of one orphans life that has been changed by Aids?
A. Video of Maggie’s Story
Transition: What Maggie is going through is awful but compared to other children she is
very lucky. Other children suffer each and everyday in more ways then could even be
understood.
III. What these children go through on a daily
A. These children are forced to take care of the dying and the younger children
and then to provided for the family so that they may eat. With all of this they are
pulled out of school to perform these tasks.
B. These children are at high risk of having livelihoods on the street or in other
potentially dangerous situations, since they are unable to go to school so that they
can support their family. Many of the girls fall into prostitution as a way to bring
in money.
C. AIDS-affected children face many obstacles to staying in school and thus to
fulfilling their right to education.
Transition: With so much suffering people are taking action, and getting involved in
helping of these orphans.
IV. How people are getting involved
A. Governments is getting involved
a. United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, states that
Children have the right to survival; physical, social and cultural
development; health; and education.
B. Groups that are focused of humanity and welfare
C. Setting up of programs to educate the orphans
a. To help them get through school
b. To educate the family on how to take care of the children
c. To educate the public on HIV/AIDS
Transition to Mathias: With all of this energy being pored into helping there is also a lot
of corruption that is taking place.
