AQUATICS
Competition Assistant Positions Include any of the following: Head Timer & Assistant Head
Timer, Timer, Disqualification Form Runner (DQ),
Head Timers: The chief responsibility of both head timer positions is to keep back-up
stopwatch times in case of errors made by the electronic timing system or the timers. The Head
Timer and Assistant Head Timer will each keep a stopwatch. *experience preferred
Timers: Each lane will have two timers using the electronic timing system to time races. One
timer will also keep a stopwatch time as backup and one timer will be responsible for recording
times on the lane sheets provided and making sure the completed lane sheets are given to the
runner. *experience preferred
The DQ runner’s chief responsibility is to visit each judge/official and collect disqualification
slips. The DQ runner will promptly return the slips to the head referee to be recorded then
make sure the slips get to the timing results coordinator.
ATHLETICS
Competition Assistant Positions Include any of the following: Starting Line Official, Finish Line
Assistant, Timing Coordinator, Shot Put Assistant, Jumping Assistant, Softball Throw Assistant,
Track Marshal, Athlete Escort
The startling line official will receive the official heat sheets from the athlete escorts and will
position athletes in the correct order to run the race. Verify the athlete name and bib number
with the official heat sheet.
The finish line assistant will be waiting at the finish line at the completion of each race in order
to ensure the athletes who have just finished competing remain and are prepped to go to
awards and will be responsible for grouping the athletes who have just finished the race and
turn them over to the athlete escort who will lead them to awards.
The chief responsibility of the timing coordinator is to assemble and prepare timesheets
following a running event and will serve as a backup timer.
The shot put assistant will check the official heat sheet to make sure all athletes scheduled to
compete in a given division are present, help position the athlete so they may prepare to throw,
measure the distance and record the best distance for each competing athlete on the division
sheet and place them (1, 2, 3) accordingly.

lanes and abide by all official rules and codes of conduct for the event.
Athlete escorts will work in pairs to gather all athletes for a particular race and will meet
athletes for the next race in the staging area and keep all athletes for each race together, and
then lead the athletes to awards once their race is complete.

The chief responsibility of the station manager is to make sure the station runs in a proper
manner according to the SONC rules and that scores for each athlete are calculated and
recorded properly.
The chief responsibility of the Base Running Assistant is to help the station manager by making
sure athletes remain in the field of play during competition.

SOFTBALL TEAM
Competition Assistant Positions Include any of the following: Scoring Assistant, Shagger/Catcher
Scoring Assistants will help the scorekeeper in identifying personnel of competing teams for
scoring purposes and collect the official rosters of the competing teams from coaches prior to
the start of competition and give the rosters to the scorekeeper.
The shagger/catcher’s chief responsibility will be to stand at the perimeter of the field of play
and retrieve balls that are hit beyond the fence or out of play and return the retrieved balls to
the field manager.
POWERLIFTING
Competition Assistant Positions Include: Spotter
The spotter should be able to lift at least 50 pounds without difficulty and be familiar with
weightlifting and comfortable around the equipment used in competition.
The chief responsibility of the spotter is to observe the lift and be ready to assist with re-racking
the weight if the athlete cannot do so on his or her own. The spotter should not attempt to
assist the athlete until given command by the official or the competition manager.

The chief responsibility of the station manager will be to make each skill station run in a proper
manner according to SONC rules and ensure scores are calculated and recorded properly for
each athlete, by preparing the station for competition, ensuring other volunteers are in place
and all necessary equipment is at the station.
The ball monitor will retrieve balls after each attempt at a station.
The tosser for overhead passing is positioned in the back court and is responsible for tossing
the ball underhanded so that the athlete may complete the overhead pass.
The tosser for passing will stand in the middle of the front court and is responsible for tossing
the ball with a two-hand, underhanded throw to the athlete for so they may complete the pass.
The target will stand in the front court on the left side and will hold your hands, palms facing
outward, straight above your head and provide a target at which the athlete may aim their “set”

The ball retriever will stand on the perimeter of the court and will be responsible for retrieving
balls that have traveled out of play and returning them to the appropriate side for service.

NON-COMPETITION JOBS
Position: Volunteer Check-in
The chief responsibility of this volunteer is to verify and check-in the volunteers for your venue.
Once volunteer check-in is over, you will then become a venue assistant, helping the venue
manager, or other manager, with lunch, clean-up, and other duties as assigned.
Since volunteers make the event possible, please be kind, energetic, and courteous to all who
check in at your table! You are the first line of contact volunteers have with SONC and we want
it to be a memorable experience!
Position: Power Team
The power team volunteer provides invaluable logistical support for the event in a variety of
capacities. You do not need huge muscles to be a part of power team, just willingness to roll up
your sleeves!
The power team may perform a variety of tasks throughout the event such as:
1. Assisting with lunch distribution
2. Refilling water coolers and restocking cone cups
3. Delivering equipment
4. Inventorying equipment
5. Putting up signage
6. Collecting directional signage
7. Setting up areas within a venue (tables, chairs, tents)
8. Dealing with faulty equipment and locating replacements
9. Breakdown/cleanup of the venue.
Position: Meal Operations
The Meal Operations volunteer will organize meals to be distributed to athletes and volunteers
and assist in the cleanup of meal operations.
Position: Access Control
Access Control Volunteers are responsible for assisting with parking and also with controlling
pedestrian traffic flow in designated areas.
There are certain areas of competition which need to be limited to only athletes and/or coaches.
In other situations such as the dance, access is limited so entrances must be monitored and exits
must be watched to avoid athletes leaving the venue unattended.
Access control volunteers should be rotated regularly to cover various areas. If you have been in
a position for an extended amount of time and feel you need to rotate, do not leave your
assignment. Instead, have someone alert the logistics manager or venue manager.
