Interaction between species:
For an organism, adapting to the environment means finding a niche, or ______________________________,

Class Notes:
For an organism, adapting to the environment means finding a niche, or a specific role in an ecosystem, in order
to interact successfully with other organisms.
Organisms interact in 3 ways:
    7. competition – same niche, limited resources – competing in sports = 1st place, in an ecosystem =
        survival
adaptations: animals – birds competing for nest sites in my front yard – page 663 shows
adaptation that avoid competition among warblers
plants – some release toxins so other pants can’t grow
    8. symbiosis – 3 kinds
             a. mutualism – both benefit – bacteria in your gut they eat and shekter, you no belly ache, also
sea anemone and clown fish – both get lunch for he week
             b. commensalisms – one benefits the other no affect – bird on the cow worst is a tickle or poop
             c. parasitism – story of parasitic wasp and the sphinx moth – inherent problem with being a
parasite is your host dies – adaption?
MIND CONTROL – host manipulation – 1. rabies, 2. fluke and the sheep / snails / ants 3.
toxoplasma and the cats, mouse “I aint afraid of you” and then gets eaten, and then…
YOU!!! More likely to engage in risky behavior like sky diving, bungee jumping and fatal
                motorvehicle accidents

   9. predation adaptations: chase or escape = speed, fight, claws or armor, hide camo or mimicry – look like
something dangerous so nobody bothers you and you can just sit back and enjoy life.

   Predator Prey relationships

   10. How do the populations change in the short run? Fluctuations
   11. How do the populations change in the long run? overall stability

When an ecosystem is in a state of EQUILIBRIUM all the species can coexist in their niches without
dramatic changes in their populations over time.

Make equilibrium with the candles and talk about why (once lit) the candle goes back and forth or “oscillates”
