How to download Library eBooks to a Sony Reader

How borrowing Library eBooks works:

• eBooks circulate like any other library materials. The Library owns a copy of each title.

• If a title is checked out, it will say ‘Request this Item’. You can place a request on it and be

notified by email when the title is available to be checked out and downloaded.

• If a title is available it will say ‘Add to Cart’. You can check out these titles right away.

• You have a choice to check out an eBook for either 14 or 21 days. eBooks automatically

expire after the lending period is complete.

• If you prefer, you can return eBooks earlier than the due date.

• You may have 5 downloadable books (eBooks and audio books) checked out at a time, and

5 requests pending at a time.

Step 1: Setup your computer to work with the Library’s eBook provider, Anytime Library.

1. Verify your Sony Reader has v.1.1 firmware installed.

2. Install free Sony eBook Library software from ebookstore.sony.com/download

3. Go to the Bellingham Public Library website www.bellinghampubliclibrary.org and click on

‘Download Audiobooks & eBooks’ under ‘Collections @ Your Library’, or go to

anytime.lib.overdrive.com

4. On the left side of the screen, click on the words ‘My Help!’. This is an interactive tool to help you

get your computer ready to download eBooks to your Sony Reader.

5. Click on ‘Read eBooks’ and then on ‘Sony Reader’.

6. Click on ‘View my Help’. Step 1 lists Overdrive’s software requirements. Step 2 provides a link to

download Adobe Digital Editions. Click on it and download and install Adobe Digital Editions to

your computer.

7. Open up Adobe Digital Editions on your desktop. It will ask you to activate your software with an

Adobe ID. If you do not already have an Adobe ID, click on the ‘Create an Adobe Account’ but-

ton and follow the instructions.

a. You may download the book to more than one computer as long as the computers all

use the same Adobe ID. (Up to 6 computers can be activated using one Adobe ID).

b. You can transfer your eBooks only to Sony Readers that are using the same Adobe ID.

8. Turn on your Sony Reader and let it boot up. Activate your Sony Reader by plugging it into your

computer with Adobe Digital Editions open.

9. Adobe Digital Editions will detect your Sony Reader and ask to activate it using the same Adobe ID

as your copy of Adobe Digital Editions. Follow the prompts (it may take a few minutes for Adobe

Digital Editions to see your Sony Reader).

Step 2: Borrowing library eBooks on Anytime Library

1. Go to the Bellingham Public Library website www.bellinghampubliclibrary.org and click on

‘Download Audiobooks & eBooks’ under ‘Collections @ Your Library’, or go to

anytime.lib.overdrive.com

2. Search for eBooks. You can limit your search to eBooks by clicking on the Advanced Search

option and choosing Adobe EPUB eBook from the format drop down box (see illustration on the

next page).

3. You can also limit to available copies, by clicking ‘Only show titles with copies available’ from

the Advanced Search screen.

4. When doing ‘Quick Searches’, your results will show both eBooks and audiobooks. You can tell the

difference by checking the type of the book and what they will play on. The first item

in the image below is an audiobook. The second is an eBook.

5. To check out a book, click ‘Add to Cart’.

6. Login using your library barcode number (found on the back of your library card) and your PIN

(usually the last 4 digits of your telephone number). Proceed to checkout. Confirm checkout.

7. Click download and choose ‘Open with Adobe Digital Editions’.

Step 3: Getting your eBook from Adobe Digital editions onto your Sony Reader

1. Plug your Sony Reader into your computer. Let it boot up.

2. Open Adobe Digital Editions.

3. If you have not previously set it up, Adobe Digital Editions will ask to register your Sony Reader

using the same Adobe ID as your Digital Editions.

4. Your Sony Reader will appear on the left under ‘Bookshelves’.

5. To transfer your eBook to the Sony Reader, click on your previously downloaded eBook and

drag it to the Sony Reader icon on the left side of the screen. The book will transfer.

6. Unplug your Sony Reader from your computer.

7. To find your new eBook, go to ‘Library’, and then to ‘My files’. Your new eBook will be in the

Digital Editions file.

How to return an eBook early

1. To return an item early so you may check out another title, hover your mouse over the eBook

in Adobe Digital Editions.

2. Click on the Item Options arrow.

3. Click on ‘Return Borrowed Item’.

What to do when your eBook expires

1. When your license to view an eBook expires, you will no longer be able to read the title.

However, the data for the eBook will remain on your computer and your Sony Reader, until

you delete it.

2. To delete the eBook from Adobe Digital Editions, click on the Item Options arrow over the

book title and click ’Delete Item’.

3. To delete the eBook from your Sony Reader, click on the Sony Reader icon in Adobe Digital

Editions. Click the Item Options arrow and then click ‘Delete Item’.
