Next, Tuesday, July 30, DHR/IT will update all desktops in your section with Windows 2000 and Office 2000 Professional (desktops only – laptops are not included at this time) and deliver applications specific to your section with a product called ZENworks. IT has successfully rolled out ZENworks in several other divisions/departments within DHR and is working toward the goal of implementing ZENworks throughout all of DHR. This initiative is in accordance with DHR/IT Standards that have been developed by a Standards and Review Board (with representation from all major divisions in DHR) and approved by DHR Management. Novell ZENworks (Zen Effort Networks), otherwise known as Zen, is an administration tool that enables IT to image PC’s with a new Operating system (Windows 2000), Desktop Suite (Office 2000 Professional), along with providing standard features and capabilities on the desktop. Zen allows IT to distribute software and provide remote control capabilities that DHR’s Helpdesk staff can use to help solve many computer problems without visiting the desktop, thus saving the end user and DHR/IT support staff valuable time and money. Through ZENworks IT will be able to deliver a consistent desktop across the enterprise. This in turn, should help minimize downtime for end users and even when problems do occur, enables IT to respond and resolve problems quicker due to uniformity in the desktop environment. Your section has provided IT with a comprehensive list of all users in your department along with the various applications each person uses. IT will use this list to make sure each person receives the same business related applications they used today on their Zenned PC. You were provided with 2 documents that you can use to prepare your workstation for the Zen process. Please follow the instructions included in these 2 documents. They instruct you on how to backup all your important documents to c:\mydocuments folder on their hard drive. IT is responsible for backing up c:\mydocuments and the Groupwise archive file "c:\archive" to the network prior to reconfiguring your PC with Zen and copying these files back once they have been Zenned. If for some reason you are missing the documents that have been attached for you convenience. After the initial Zen implementation in the evening of Tuesday, July 30, DHR/IT will have staff available and walking the floor on Wednesday, July 31 to make sure everyone’s PC is working properly.
