H.         CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION:Fundamentals of Occupational Therapy I is a 3 credit hour
           course designed as an introduction to the profession of occupational therapy. The student will
           become acquainted with the history of occupational therapy and the role of the occupational
           therapy assistant (OTA) within the profession. The healthcare system and position of the OTA in
           that system will be discussed. The student will be oriented to steps in the occupational therapy
           intervention process using a developmental framework.

I.         PRE-REQUISITES/CO-COURSES: N/A

J.         GOALS (STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES):
           By the end of this course, the student will:
     1.    identify goals and objectives for successful completion of an OT/OTA curriculum or
           curriculum/career of choice if not an OT/OTA student
     2.    describe strategies for accessing academic support if needed
     3.    identify library/media resources for OT reference
     4.    identify community resources for OT reference
     5.    describe the term occupation and occupational therapy
     6.    demonstrate an understanding of the concepts or habit, roles, and routines as components of
           occupation
     7.    relate culture to the concept of meaning in occupation
     8.    discuss the importance of multicultural awareness and sensitivity in healthcare interactions
     9.    identify significant milestones in the development of the occupational therapy profession
     10.   identify major contributors to the profession and discuss the significant historical perspectives
           that influenced them
     11.   demonstrate an understanding of the important documents/useful tenents that drive the
           occupational therapy profession and ethical practice
     12.   identify various tools and concepts used in the occupational therapy process
     13.   identify the professional organizations specific to the OT profession
     14.   compare the roles and functions of professional organizations and the process for accessing
           professional support
     15.   describe the certification process and its significance to the OT/OTA student
     16.   describe the accreditation process and its significance to the OT/OTA student
     17. identify the importance of licensure within the professions and its application to OTA in New
         York State (students from other states or those planning to move to another locale for practice
         will be encouraged to investigate other jurisdictions outside NYS as well)
     18. identify trends in healthcare which influence OT delivery
     19. demonstrate basic knowledge of health care (medical) terminology specific to OT
     20. begin to apply OT terminology in writing
     21. delineate the roles and responsibilities of the OT and OTA including guidelines for supervision
     22. after reviewing the development of teams, discuss successful ways in which to collaborate across
         the health professions
     23. identify components of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process and
         Occupational Therapy Uniform Terminology
     24. describe the primary steps in the occupational therapy process
     25. discuss the importance of client driven goals and motivation in occupational therapy
     26. identify treatment modalities and techniques common to occupational therapy
     27. identify the changing trends in technology and basic application in OT
     28. describe the importance of continued professional competency in the field of occupational
         therapy
     29. discuss various methods for obtaining continued professional development and continued
         professional competency in occupational therapy

M.       EQUIPMENT:
         Internet Access for Blackboard. Contact the Campus Informational Technology Help Desk or the
         Blackboard Home Page (Frequently Asked Questions) for specific requirements. Make sure you
         use a computer system that is compatible with Blackboard. Document attachments should be
         formatted in Microsoft Word. Please avoid creating documents in Microsoft Works, as these
         documents may be difficult for others to open.

O.      MEASUREMENT CRITERIA/METHODS:
Assignments: Learning activities will be assigned at various times throughout this course to enhance
your learning experience and to check your understanding of the material being covered. (5 points total).
Quizzes: Quizzes are designed to check basic knowledge and awareness of concepts. They are designed
for you to check your skills in the virtual classroom environment and can be redone for mastery. You can
expect to have a quiz every couple of weeks as a “quick check” of your skill mastery. (5 quizzes worth 3
points each = 15 points total).
Mid-Term/Final: These test your ability to integrate information across the course. They will be multiple
choice/short answer/essay format 15 points each (30 points total).
Short Paper/Project: Enables you to explore a topic of interest and present information to inform your
classmates about the importance of occupation. (Paper worth 15 points, Presentation/Leading Discussion
worth 5 points = 20 points total).

Discussion Board: Weekly topics include an online discussion or activity lead by the instructor or one of
your classmates. (Worth 2 points per week = 30 points total)
