The history of the tri-university colloquium between Fudan University (Fudan), Korea University (KU) and National University of Singapore (NUS) began in 2005. After establishing a common vision for the global economy, Fudan, KU and NUS founded the S3 University Alliance (S3 UA). Defined by the cities anchoring the universities, Shanghai, Seoul, and Singapore, the S3 UA is the outcome of the Seoul Declaration for Collaboration sealed at the Tri-University Colloquium in Seoul, Korea on 19 May 2006. The alliance is a milestone in the development of closer collaboration between the three universities, and charts a significant step in the progress of academic expertise in Asian business. Research and education programs initiated under the S3 UA are globally-oriented, with a significant focus on Asia. As a globally-oriented association targeted at developing research and education programs based in the 3 cities and the 3 universities, the S3 UA aims to: I. tap on the strengths of the 3 cities and the 3 universities; II. monitor education trends and developments in Asia that will impact the S3 UA and its programs; and III. achieve international recognition for the S3 UA and its programs. The S3 Asia MBA is a definitive milestone in global MBA education, and serves as a concrete and ambitious project that the S3 UA is aimed at achieving. 0 4 0 5 I ntroduction Introduction Three Deans and One Message Under the spirit of the S3 University Alliance, the three deans met and discovered common interests and goals. All three business schools were involved in implementing ambitious plans for globalization, but a limiting factor was the lack of coordination across Asia. A paradigm shift was necessary to push each one’s success to greater heights: All three business schools needed to harmonize efforts beyond national boundaries and leverage on each others’ specialty in business education and strong international reputation Thus, a unique collaboration was borne. The S3 Asia MBA marks an epoch in the development of a truly innovative partnership that has never been attempted by other business schools before – enabling the inter-institutional support and sharing of resources between three countries to deliver a globally-competitive business education. The S3 Asia MBA is designed to enable students to acquire a distinctively global scope, coupled with a keen awareness of Asian implications in business decisions. By offering not only an unparalleled experience in MBA education in three dynamic cities – Shanghai, Seoul and Singapore – the S3 Asia MBA will also expose students to career opportunities in these three countries – China, Korea and Singapore. As a result, the S3 Asia MBA graduates will form the first true generation of “Global Business Leaders.” The S3 Asia MBA program is the finest program of its kind in Asia, and represents the best vehicle for prospective students to learn about the challenges and opportunities of Asian business. We welcome you, the first challengers, who start the journey of becoming the future global leaders with expertise in Asian business. Shanghai-SeoulSingapore Network e Th Asi Why the S Asia MBA? 3 Asia will be the focus of much of the world’s economic and political activities in the 21st century. Its rapid development has led to the increasing complexity of doing business in the region bounded by vast differences in economic, business, cultural, institutional and socio-political conditions. Increasingly, there is a growing need for a pan-Asian MBA program offering an in-depth understanding of the theories and practices of conducting business in Asia. However, few universities in Asia have the research and teaching capabilities to offer a program that provides the depth of theoretical and practical education required by managers. Hence, the non-customized standard MBA was, until now, the primary formal management education and training tool available in Asia. The S3 Asia MBA Experience Tri-Semester Curriculum Three semesters have to be completed under the S3 Asia MBA program. Students will start their first semester in Shanghai, spend their second semester in Seoul, and finish their last semester in Singapore. Students who intend to get a degree from Fudan University need to register for the fourth semester and write their master thesis. The S3 Asia MBA requires rigorous study, creativity and imagination, analytical thinking and teamwork. The curriculum is carefully designed to allow students to continually build on concepts and skills learned in earlier courses as they proceed through the program. The integration and collaboration between these three leading business schools in Asia will offer worldwide competitiveness in a world-class Asian business education. The S3 Asia MBA program aims to meet the growing and diverse needs and expectations of students, employers, faculty, alumni, universities and governments by preparing students for senior leadership positions in major business locations in Asia and the world. This program will combine the unique strengths of the three leading business schools into an exceptional MBA program taught in three of the most sophisticated and rapidly developing cities in the world. 3 Singapore 2 Seoul 1 7 Marketing Management (3) Operations Management (3) Corporate Finance (3) Business Ethics (2) Management of Information Systems (3) Business in Korea and Japan (2) Field Trip or Independent Study (1) Basic Korean / Business English (0) Corporate Strategy (3) Asia Pacific Business (3) Elective 1 (3) Elective 2 (3) Elective 3 (3) Business English (4) Field Trip or Independent Study (1) 4 Shanghai Dissertation (Fudan students only) (1) *Required for Fudan students and optional elective for KU and NUS students **Optional implies that students can take a zero-credit course for their own benefit. The credit hours for each course is aligned with the teaching system of each respective university; course credits will be directly accepted by the other S3 Asia MBA partner universities. In the first semester conducted in Shanghai, the S3 Asia MBA students will take core courses, which provide the foundational skills of business, including the basic concepts of microeconomics, financial reporting, statistical tools and decision heuristics, managing individuals and working in teams. In addition, they will take Business in China, a course which covers Chinese history, culture, economy and business practices. This course is delivered via guest speaker series, seminars, and group discussions. The second semester in Seoul consists of courses such as marketing, operations management, information systems, and corporate finance. These educate students on the operational pillars of a business enterprise, building on the foundations established in Semester 1 and showing how integration of functions helps in managerial problem solving. Business in Korea and Japan covers business practices and cultural understanding of these two countries. In addition, students have the opportunity to get hands-on experience and learn how to do business locally through internships in each country. The final core courses in Semester 3 conducted in Singapore look at the big picture: 1 9 1 8 TheS3 Asia MBA Experience showing the interdependencies between each of the functional business areas, and how all are affected by the turbulent, competitive and international environment in which corporations operate. At least 3 electives will be offered to students. Fudan students who take Business English will be awarded with 4 credits. KU and NUS students are also allowed to take Business English as an elective. In addition to the regular curriculum, the S3 Asia MBA also offers a range of seminars and workshops conducted by external training consultants aimed at developing the S3 Asia MBA students into effective managers. MBA Luncheons, an extracurricular program, brings business leaders on campus to share the latest developments in their fields or the secrets behind their success. Double Degree and One Certificate Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded with two MBA degrees – a unique attraction of the S3 Asia MBA program. Each qualified candidate will be granted a “double degree” consisting of their ‘home’ degree, plus one of the two host degrees based on their own preference. An S3 Asia MBA program certificate signed by the three deans from FDSM, KUBS and NUS Business School will also be awarded. Note: A student has to declare a preferred host degree at the beginning of the semester, since formal admission from the host school is required. To receive a Fudan host degree, students need to register for an additional semester and write a master thesis.
