WHAT IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH?

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to

end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and launched

the global breast cancer movement. Today, led by more than 100,000 survivors and activists, Komen

is the world's largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting against breast cancer.

About the Komen Los Angeles County Affiliate

The Los Angeles County Affiliate has raised $8.1 million dollars since 1996 to provide community

grants to local organizations that provide breast cancer screening, education, and treatment services.

A major focus of the Komen Los Angeles County Affiliate is to help uninsured and underinsured

women and men who have symptoms of breast cancer and are facing barriers to accessing health

care, particularly women and men under 40 years old.

Our Promise

To save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all,

and energizing science to find the cures

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to highlight

Komen LA County’s work in the community and raise awareness

about breast cancer and the importance of early detection in our community. Our goal is for

representatives from workplaces, schools, and service organizations to serve as “Breast Cancer

Awareness Month Ambassadors.” Ambassadors will organize a breast health awareness event

at their organizations during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

Komen Los Angeles County will provide Ambassadors with a Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Toolkit, which will be available at our office and online. These materials will provide

Ambassadors with tools and information to become Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Ambassadors for their respective organizations. Ambassadors will serve as breast health

messengers and will organize a breast health education event at their workplace, school, or

service organization.

Past Breast Cancer Awareness Month Ambassadors will serve as mentors to this year’s

Ambassadors to provide guidance and feedback to new representatives.

Past successful Breast Cancer Awareness Month events included “lunch and learns” at

workplaces devoted to breast cancer awareness, including Komen information at health

fairs, Race for the Cure team competitions at workplaces and schools, sorority and other

university fundraisers, and announcements at service organization meetings.

Breast cancer knows no boundary, be it age, gender, socio-economic status or geographic location. Be aware. Take action.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a powerful way to advance Komen for the Cure’s

promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring

quality of care for all, and energizing science to find the cures.

You can join this powerful movement to motivate and empower the community. Komen LA

County recognizes the strength and power of local businesses, schools, and service

organizations as a platform for breast health education. Join us to help raise awareness!!
