General Information

Race Schedule

Races will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. on both days [i.e., the starting gun for the first race of each day will

sound at that time]. Crews scheduled to race in the first three heats of the day are urged to be at the

crew assembly area 30 minutes before the starting gun to avoid delays in the schedule. Please refer to

the Race Line-up and Crew Listing for your crew‟s races.







Assembly, Loading & Unloading Dragon Boats

Crew assembly procedures and loading times are as follows:



 30 – 40 minutes prior to scheduled start time, crews must report to the crew assembly area



 20 minutes prior to scheduled start time, crews will board boats and proceed to the start line



All crews must follow specific instructions while proceeding to the start line, as well as when returning to

the loading area after each race. Failure to do so may result in disqualification from future races, as time

between races is limited.



Note: In the event of unforeseen circumstances, races may not proceed exactly according to the

published schedule. Crews should ensure that they are prepared to load well before the

scheduled start time. Announcements will be made over public address systems [at both the

grandstand and crew assembly] but crews are responsible for tracking the progress of the

schedule.







Crew Membership

Crew members are allowed to race for only one crew within the same race division (Premier Mixed or

Premier Women). However, they can race for a second crew in another division (e.g. a female athlete

may be allowed to paddle in a Premier Women crew and a Premier Mixed crew separately). This

practice, although permitted, is nevertheless not encouraged as conflicts in the race schedule may

prevent the crew members from racing in more than one division.



These restrictions apply only to paddlers and not to drummers or steer-persons. Rosters for each crew

are allowed to have a maximum of 28 members.

Races

All Premier Mixed and Premier Women Teams will have four races – two heats on Saturday and two final

races (i.e. a Divisional Final race and a Special/Cup race) on Sunday. Junior Mixed teams will have three

races all on Saturday – two heats and a final race.





Eligibility for Divisional Final Races

All Premier Mixed, Premier Women, and Junior Mixed teams are eligible to participate in a final race.

Placement in the final races will be based on the results of the two heats taken part on Saturday. Teams

will be ranked according to the average time of their two heat races.





Eligibility for Special/Cup Races

All crews (except for Junior and Spirit Challenge categories) registered for the festival are eligible to

participate in a Special/Cup race on Sunday based on the type of industry or organization they represent.

Placement in these races will depend on the results from Saturday‟s events. Teams will be ranked

according to the average time of their two heat races within their groups (please refer to classification on

Page 40).



For the Hospitals Cup races, only employees of participating organizations are eligible to paddle. These

organizations must submit a separate crew roster to the Festival for participation in the cup races, should

it differ from the regular crew roster.



Participants in the University Cup races must be post-secondary students of the past academic year

[2010 – 2011] and all crew members must attend the college or faculty [or be members of the student

organization] that the crew is representing.

These restricitions apply only to paddlers, not to drummers or steer-persons.





Scoring & Advancement

For each crew, placement in the finals will be based on the average time of the two heats. In the event of

a disqualification, 10 seconds will be added to the disqualified crew‟s time for the particular race for the

purpose of placement in the finals (please refer to the scoring rules on page 10).







Identification

All participants are required to wear a name wristband issued by the Festival at the races and carry a

piece of personal photo identification for verification purposes when necessary.

Award Presentations

(1) All the award presentations will be held IMMEDIATELY after each race at the Athletes’ Stage

[near the crew assembly area]. Please refer to the awards presentation schedule on page 34.





(2) Premier Mixed and Women Championship races, Regular Final races and Special/Cup races.





The top three teams of all Premier Mixed and Women divisional final races and Special/Cup races will

be presented with awards at the Athletes‟ Stage as soon as their races are completed. However, all

teams participating in the Premier Mixed Grand Championship, Premier Women Championship, and

Spirit Challenge Championships will be presented with awards.





(3) Junior Championship and Final races.





All the teams in the Junior Championship race and the top three teams in the Final, B and C races will be

presented with awards as soon as each race is completed on Saturday.





(4) Acknowledgement of Receipt



Crew captains will be required to sign a form, acknowledging the team has received the awards. In the

case of Cup winners, please note that this form stipulates the Cups are the property of the Toronto

International Dragon Boat Race Festival and must be returned the following year.

Scoring Guide

Crews in the Premier Mixed and Premier Women divisions will each participate in two heats and two final

races. Junior Mixed crews will participate in two heats and one final race. The placement of the final

races will be based on the crew‟s overall standing in the heats, which is determined by the average time

of the two heats. In the event of a disqualification, 10 seconds will be added to the time of the disqualified

crew.







Premier Mixed Division

All Premier Mixed heats will take place on Saturday. For each crew, positioning for the final round is

based on the average time of the two heats. All Premier Mixed finals, including the championship races,

will take place on Sunday. Line-ups for the finals [and Cup races] will be posted on the scoreboard within

one hour after the last Premier Mixed heat [Race 50] and at the Festival website www.dragonboats.com

by 8:00 p.m. on Saturday evening.
