COLORADO PASOS
A Chapter of the Great Western Paso Fino Horse Association____
November 10, 2005
2005 Colorado State Fair
Fiesta Weekend at the Colorado State Fair is a time of celebration for those of
Latin heritage. There is a parade and two days of singing and dancing and lots of good
Spanish food. To make the celebration complete, this year the Colorado State Fair
invited local Great Western Paso Fino owners to be part of the celebration.
Hank and Carol Kuiper, with the help of Mike Miller and Christian Harris, of
Silver Birch Ranch accepted their invitation along with Albert Vega of Paso Finos de
Vega and brought four Paso Finos to demonstrate the versatility of our wonderful breed
to the many spectators and exhibitors.
Tio Vivo del Cardo and Darice Mystique of Silver Birch Ranch and Dos Tambien
de Mossy Oaks and Domino El Trepador of Paso Finos de Vega gave over 200 demo
rides to people attending the celebration. Darice Mystique, a bay Tobiano Pinto Paso
Fino, drew the most attention from the mainly Paint and Quarter Horse exhibitors. They
had never heard of Paso Finos being pinto. This was the second time that Darice had
been the hit of the crowd at the Colorado State Fair. The first time was when she won
the Colorado State Fair High Point Paso Fino title in 1995.
The people signed up to try out a Paso Fino varied from those that had never
ridden a horse to experienced riders wanting their first experience riding a Paso Fino.
The response was the same from everyone, smiles of pleasure and the desire to learn
more about our wonderful breed. These wonderful horses gave their all and contributed
greatly to the promotion of the Paso Fino in Colorado.
The wonderful Paso Finos in the Colorado Great Western area will once again be
wowing the crowds at the Cowboy Christmas Celebration in Colorado Springs during
Thanksgiving weekend. Come and see us there!

Youth Mundial Clinic
By Helene McIntosh
When Melissa attended the Milda Minter Clinic at the Ireland's on July 4th, Milda suggested to
her to go to the All Youth Show and Youth Mundial Clinic in Morristown, TN, at the end of the
month. She mentioned she might arrange for a horse to show for Melissa. We decided to go.
We arrived on Friday evening in Morristown, checked into our hotel, then visited the show
grounds where we met up with Milda and her two girls Christina and Morgan. She had brought several
horses, but the horse Melissa was to show was to be delivered the next day. Friday evening, the girls
jumped on horses to get used to the grounds. Melissa got to ride a beautiful white gelding.
Saturday morning, the show started. The judges were Ms. Ellen Perez and Mr. Carlos Tobon. The
first classes were held and we were still waiting for the horse for Melissa. We were quite excited when
she finally arrived mid -morning. Mr. Dick Miller brought a 4 year old, pretty, gray filly, EZG Delilah.
Melissa saddled her up right away to try her out in the warm-up arena. After a few minutes of getting
acquainted to one another, we decided to enter her in the Novice Performance class that was only
minutes away. Melissa and Delilah rode away with a blue ribbon. That was the only class that we
entered her for that day....
After all the classes were held, at about 3:00pm, the Youth Mundial Clinic started with explaining
rules and getting tips from both judges Ms. Perez and Mr. Tobon, and from people who attended the
last Mundial Show in Puerto Rico. Lots of questions were asked and answered. There was quite a
crowd of young people and their parents. After being told about the requirements at the Mundial, they
were asked to saddle up and a "mock show" was held. Each judge took 5 riders "under their wing".
Each rider received at least 30 minutes of personal instruction. They were critiqued and given valuable
tips, from how to greet the Mundial judges, to how to sit properly, to how to hold the reins correctly
(which is totally different from what Melissa was used to) for the show. Each rider was told how to
ride the required course. They were told how to approach the judges, greet them, then ride 2 figure
eights around barrels -- changing directions, next to move to do serpentines, also changing directions,
and lastly to ride over the fino board, also changing directions....
Melissa learned a lot and was utterly exhausted after the clinic finally ended late in the evening.
By the way, the rules on attending the Youth Mundial are available on the PFHA website. From my
understanding any youth from the U.S. can participate with the only requirement, at this time, being
that she/he has attended at least one Youth Mundial Clinic.
The horse a youth gets to ride is given to him/her via a lottery. The horses are well trained show
horses, can be pleasure, performance, fino, or trote/galope. Now - the course has to be ridden
according to the type of the horse. If it is fino, the entire course has to be ridden fino. If it is pleasure
and performance, the course has to be ridden in a corto. If it is a trote y galope horse, one part has to be
ridden in a trot and the other in a canter. For example, the figure eight in one direction has to be ridden
in a trot, when changing direction; it has to be in canter. The same goes for the serpentines and fino
board...I think this could be very confusing. The judge's advice was to try to ride trote y galope horses
if any way possible.
Back to the show - on Sunday, Melissa rode Delilah in the Youth Pleasure class with the judges
being Ms. Betsy McHugh and Mr. Larry Whitesell. They did well with getting a 2nd and a 3rd placing.
Comments were made by the judges that all young riders were very professional and all horses brought
were of excellent quality.
In closing, Melissa and I had a lot of fun and learned a great deal. We would like to thank
several people, Milda Minter for suggesting to us to go to this show and for helping us out, Dick Miller
for bringing EZG Delilah, a wonderful filly. Ms. Perez and Mr. Tobon for their time and patience with
each youth during the clinic.

Great Western PFHA Elections
Great Western PFHA held it's annual membership meeting in conjunction with the High Desert
Classic in Hurricane, UT on 15 October 2005. Although there were a variety of topics discussed at the
meeting, the highlight included election of the 2006/2007 Board of Directors and Delegate positions.
Suzie Tiller chaired the Nomination Committee and provided ballots for every eligible GWPFHA
member. The majority of votes were cast via mail prior to the meeting. While the meeting was being
conducted, Suzie was sequestered into a corner to tally the votes. The results of the votes were as
follows:
President: Denise Ireland
Vice President: Betty Griffis
Secretary: Carol Nudell
Treasurer: Stacy Bjerke-Curby
Director at Large: Judi Bradbury
Mike Ecker
Delegate: Carol Kuiper
Alternate Delegate: Kelly Ireland
Cont. on next page
We appreciate each of the elected officials for volunteering the time and efforts for the benefit of the
Paso Fino community. Congratulations to everyone on their election to these vital positions. If you
would like to serve on a GWPFHA Committee, please contact President Denise Ireland, Membership
Chairman Judi Bradbury, or your Chapter President/Representative. We would love to have members
take an active role in GWPFHA.
The next GWPFHA meeting will be held on 7 January 2006 at the Grand Vista Hotel in Grand
Junction Colorado at 10 a.m. President Denise Ireland has opted to make this an open BOD meeting,
allowing all members to attend. An agenda and more information will be provided closer to the
