COMMEMORATIVE SPEECH
OBJECTIVE: To write and deliver a four to five minute commemorative speech from
manuscript.
COMMEMORATIVE SPEECH:
Commemorative speeches pay tribute to a person, a group of people, an institution, or an
idea. The subject may be historical or contemporary, famous or obscure. This speech
should be written and delivered from a manuscript-outline. The manuscript-outline
includes your speech in full-text, but every part of the speech must be labeled in outline
form (see sample- Tribute to Paul). Please provide a copy of your manuscript-outline for
me before you speak. The speech should be thoroughly rehearsed so it can be presented
with strong eye contact and vocal variety.
An introduction, body, and conclusion are still required for this type of speech, but you
may want to “deformalize” these structural elements somewhat to make this speech more
personal. The use of language and style of delivery are major goals for this assignment.
Language should be used imaginatively with the use of devices for enhancing clarity and
vividness (see chapter 11).
