Important Graphing Calculator Information
Many of you have inquired about purchasing graphing calculators for your child’s
Stuyvesant career. The Department of Mathematics, in collaboration with the
Department of Physical Sciences, recommends that students entering Stuyvesant
purchase the TI-84 Plus or TI-84 Plus Silver Edition calculator. These calculators
are REQUIRED for the Math B Regents, the SAT’s, and for Advanced Placement
Courses in Calculus, Statistics, and Physics. These calculators are upgradeable via
the internet and will never become obsolete. Although they are a significant initial
expense ($110-$125), they will serve you for your entire Stuyvesant career and
beyond. There are some occasions when teachers will not permit the use of these
high powered (graphing) calculators, so students are encouraged to keep the
scientific calculator that they may have purchased for use in middle school. If you
wish to purchase a scientific calculator, we strongly recommend the TI 30-XIIS
($15) or the TI 30 XA ($10).
Some Frequently Asked Questions About Calculators
Q: We already own a TI-83 or TI-83 Plus Calculator. Do I need to purchase the TI-84 Plus?
A: No! The TI-83 Plus and TI-83 should be adequate.
Q: Texas Instruments also makes a TI-89 that is more advanced than the TI-84 Plus. Should I
purchase that model?
A: No! It is too powerful and is not allowed for examinations in the Department of Mathematics.
Thus, you will also need a TI-84 Plus. The TI-84 Plus is highly recommended.
Q: Why do I need to buy a graphing calculator for a 9th grader?
A: The New York State Mathematics Standards and Assessments will require the use of a high
powered, graphing calculator. It is also required for the SAT and other important exams. It is a
good investment in your child’s education.
Q: Will my child be allowed to use the calculator on all his/her tests.
A: No! Calculator use on assessments is determined by the teacher or the department.
Q: What can I do if I cannot afford to purchase a graphing calculator?
A: The school has a LIMITED number of loaner calculators available. They will be distributed
based on a financial needs basis. Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch will be given first
priority to obtain loaner calculators.
Beware: Graphing calculators are valuable and costly to replace. Students must be reminded that they
are to be kept on one’s person and not left lying around in an unattended book bag. Additionally, students
are encouraged to write or etch their names on the calculator so that it can be returned if it is misplaced.
