					Lan Samantha Chang
                  Background
   Lan Samantha Chang was born in Appleton,
    Wisconsin in 1965 to Chinese immigrants who
    survived the World War II Japanese invasion of
    China
   Chang attended Yale university where she received a
    bachelor’s degree in East Asian studies
   She then got her master’s degree in public
    administrations from Harvard university
   After that she attended the uiversity of Iowa’s
    prestigious Writer’s workshop where she received her
    MFA (Master’s of Fine Arts)
              Published Works




   Her works include Hunger: a novella and stories, and
    Inheritance: a novel
                   Influence
   “I wonder if I would have become a writer if I
    had been raised in a more diverse
    community…my childhood in Appleton
    prepared me for writing-for observing and
    recording-because I grew up feeling like an
    outsider…I can not remember a time when I
    was not conscious of being different from the
    majority of the people around me.”
Where Is She Now?
            Lan Samantha Chang is currently
             a professor of english at the
             university of Iowa and the first
             female and Asian American
             director of the Iowa writer’s
             workshop
            She is also a teacher at the Warren
             Wilson college MFA program for
             writers
            In 2008 she received the
             Guggenheim Fellowship, which is
             awarded to people who have a
             great capacity for scholarship and
             creative ability in the arts.
