On Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at 5:34 a.m., Slidell police officers responded to an undisclosed residence
located on Pinetree St. after a 75-year-old female reported being raped. Officers quickly began searching
for the male suspect as described by the victim.
The victim reported being awakened at approximately 3:30 a.m. when the suspect was climbing into her
bed. The suspect, who was armed with a pair of scissors and threatened to harm her if she did not submit,
raped her. At approximately 5:34 a.m., the suspect decided to leave and demanded money from the
victim. After turning over a small amount of cash, the suspect fled on foot toward the adjacent Lincoln
Park neighborhood. At 6:17 a.m., while officers were searching the area, Lt. Pat Matthews saw a subject
matching the description walking on Daney St. The suspect was stopped and identified as 36-year-old
Eric Dewayne Jett. After he admitted being in the victim’s residence, Jett was taken into custody for
further questioning by Detectives Claude Stevens and Sean McLain.
The detectives learned that on Monday, July 12th, Jett went to the victim’s residence asking to do work
around her home for food. Although the victim declined his offer, she did give him a sandwich to eat. Jett
stated that although his family lives in Picayune, MS, he has been homeless for the past four months and
has been living in public parks around the city. On this date, Jett went to the victim’s residence with
intentions of burglarizing her home. He removed an air conditioning window unit and climb through the
window. Once inside, Jett stated he was looking for valuables and stumbled upon the sleeping victim. Jett
decided to rape the victim and climbed into her bed while armed with the scissors.
The victim positively identified Jett as the perpetrator. Jett, who was cooperative and freely admitted
committing the crimes, was booked at the Slidell City Jail with aggravated rape and aggravated burglary.
Although Jett has prior arrests for drug violations, he does not have any prior arrests for sex-related
