                                                   nd
January 9 thru January 12 were the dates for the 2 running of the Quail Forever/NSTRA Championship held at
the Four Star Plantation in Elberton, Georgia. We were welcomed by our gracious hosts, Danny and Nancy
Brownlow. The Brownlows offered us the use of their plantation for an entire week which included a 2 day
pretrial. There are many camp sites on the grounds with a rock road to each hook-up area. It would be hard to
guess the number of tons of rock that Danny hauled to make sure the campers were able to drive to their sites.
Those without campers stayed at the Elberton Inn in Elberton. The clubhouse was open throughout the day for
use by everyone. Three fields featured 148 dogs which was a “beat your bracemate” elimination for Wednesday
and Thursday on 3 fields. Friday’s elimination consisted of the top 6 dogs from A field, and the top 5 from B and
C fields. On Saturday we went back to the “beat your bracemate” format for the duration of the trial. The pre-
trial was expertly ran by David and Angela Healan. It was a great chance for trialers to see the lay of the land for
the Championship event. The Brownlows, along with Danny’s sister, Shelia, and friends Alan and Pam Crowell
were on hand each day to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner to the trial officials, trialers and their families.
There’s never a doubt from one meal to another that the menu will be different each day and consist of great food
served with a smile; we’re talking dessert at lunch and dinner each day. We can’t thank these fine people enough
for their special southern hospitality. Also on hand every evening was Beth and Carlton Cooper, Danny and
Nancy’s daughter and grandson. Son-in-law, Ernie, was busy judging the trial during the day, but was also on
hand each evening. It is truly a family affair.

On Wednesday morning Ed Murdock, trial chairman and David Healan, co-chairman held a meeting for the trial
personnel to go over boundaries and make introductions. The trial would start around 8 a.m. each morning after
field cleaners took care of any left-over birds from the day before.

A field judges were Ernie Cooper and Shelley Dunn, with Stan Perdue as field marshal and B.J.Carroll handling
the birds for the day. Brace winners were:

The Wednesday evening meal consisted of a Lasagna dinner with all the trimmings served in the 4 Star
Plantation Clubhouse. It seems at every trial, there are those who leave to return to the motel to clean up and eat
in town. Such was not the case with this trial. The meals were served at 6:30 each evening and with the caliber
of food, no one left to eat in town. We heard rumors that Danny was thinking of starting a restaurant, but don’t
know if this has been agreed upon by the powers to be. After the meal, Georgia Region President, David Healan
announced the winners of Wednesday’s trial and Bob Cunningham, auctioneer, sold several items to a great
crowd of bidders. We were then entertained by Jimmy Johnson singing many old favorites while others enjoyed
a game of Texas Hold Em poker.

Thursday dawned with cooler temperatures and trial officials stayed as they were on Wednesday. A Field’s

Thursday evening’s festivities consisted of another fine meal and also the trophy presentation for the previous
two day’s running. David and Ed presented the trophies after dinner and many called it an early evening. Of
course our die-hard poker players were at it again, some trying to recoup their losses from the night before. The
brace winners from Wednesday and Thursday’s running were drawn for Friday’s trial which would not follow the
brace-winners advancing format. The top 6 dogs from A field, 5 from B and 5 from C would advance to
Saturday’s trial when once again we would use the brace-winners advance format. Trial officials would once
again remain in their respective fields.

On Friday evening, we were guests of the Longhorn Steak House’s catering company. The menu consisted of
steak, baked potato, salad and chocolate cake. Our hosts, the Brownlows, were also able to dine with us this
evening which made it a special treat for them and us. Dean Reinke, our Purina Representative had been with us
since Thursday and was in attendance at the banquet. Dean is always on hand to encourage all participants and
answer any questions one might have about Purina. We don’t need to be reminded that without Purina and our
other sponsors, we would no longer exist; in essence, we must support these fine people who help to keep our
sport alive. Also on hand was Bob Bertram with his beautiful oil paintings. Bob is also quite adapt with the
camera and is always willing to help out in the “picture taking” department. The Quail Forever biologist, Andy
Edwards had been on hand during the week, but was unable to attend the banquet. Andy’s region’s are Georgia,
Florida, Alabama and Tennessee. A short auction/raffle was held and also a Calcutta for Saturday’s Top Four
finalists. Thanks to Bob Cunningham for his help as auctioneer. The computer draw was held and braces
posted. After trophies were awarded, Jimmy Johnson once again serenaded the crowd with some “oldies but
goodies”. The trial would move to B and C field for Saturday with an 8:00 a.m. start time.

Saturday morning’s B field judges were Shelley and Jimmy with Stacy as field marshal and birds being handled
by Bo.

We were now down to our Top Eight dogs. This in itself is no easy fete; having advanced from 148 dogs to the
Top Eight. For many of these handlers, it was their first time to advance this far and they turned in a
commendable performance. Between each qualification round, the fields were cleaned and we are thankful for
those offering to help during this time. It’s not always easy to find those willing to help clean the fields, but this
is an important part of keeping the playing field fair. Thanks again.

Once again, thanks to the Brownlows, Purina, Bob Bertram, QF, Ed Murdock, David Healan and the Georgia
Region for all their hard work. To the trial officials, thanks for making our job so much easier; it’s a great feeling
knowing that we have the utmost confidence in your abilities, whether that be judging, marshaling or bird
handling. You did a super job, again.
Until we meet again, happy trialing.

A Few Highlights: Be sure to ask Jay Wade his directions for caring for a Filson Leather Hunting Jacket. Jay has
a special way of preserving the jacket. I believe that the story is told that when he was finished there was
nothing left but the buttons. That’s all I know.

Although Garry Foster, NSTRA Treasurer, and Ted Dewey, NSTRA President, were not on hand for long, they
were present for the evening meal on Tuesday. Both had to leave early Wednesday morning. Second Vice-
President, Frank Llano, was on hand during the week and also running his dog, Buck.

Shelia Steele, Danny’s sister, received a “You are here” gift from Danny and Nancy each day. Example, you
could be lounging on the beach, but “YOU ARE HERE”. We were glad Shelia chose being with us rather than
lounging on the beach; we’re just not sure that she was glad. She’s a great sport.

We also noticed that Roger Drake took in some “boys to raise” during the trial. Thanks to Roger, as someone
had to do it.
