5E Lesson Plan

Teacher: M. Sandoval/R. Alicea

Date:8/17/11

Subject area / course / grade level: Science/ 4th

Materials: Science notebooks, various objects of different properties and characteristics, black bags

TEKS/SEs: 3.5 Matter and energy. The student knows that matter has measurable physical properties

and those properties determine how matter is classified, changed, and used.

ELPS: During the process of developing academic language, students use prior knowledge and experiences to understand meanings in English. Students use

strategic learning techniques such as concept mapping, drawing, memorizing, comparing, contrasting, and reviewing to acquire basic and grade-level

vocabulary. Implementing vocabulary strategies also allows students to internalize new basic and academic language by using and reusing it in meaningful ways

in speaking and writing activities that build concept and language attainment.

Lesson objective(s): 4.5A Measure, compare, and contrast physical properties of matter, including size, mass, volume,

states (solid, liquid, gas), temperature, magnetism, and the ability to sink or float.

Language objectives: Students will develop vocabulary by providing both synonyms and antonyms. They will

be using these words to write reflective pieces at the end of the unit to extend their knowledge.

ENGAGEMENT

Language objectives:

Building Background

 Describe how the teacher will capture students’ interest.

 - Teacher will begin unit by allowing students to perform a gallery walk. There will be stations set up around the classroom. Each station will consist of

a black bag with an object inside. Students will reach in, feel the object, and describe what they are feeling with appropriate grade level and scientific

vocabulary. Students will record in their journals.

 What kind of questions should the students ask themselves after the engagement?

 - What object am I feeling? Have I ever used this object? If so, where and for what?

students connect their exploration to the concept under examination?

 - Teacher will use Discovery Streaming and Pebble Go to provide a variety of resources for students to explore.

 List higher order thinking questions which teachers will use to solicit student explanations and help them to justify their explanations.

 What physical properties of matter can we observe?

 How can we measure physical properties of matter?

 How can we compare and contrast physical properties of matter?

ELABORATION

Language objectives:

Practice and Application

 Describe how students will develop a more sophisticated understanding of the concept.

 - Teacher will provide flip chart to students to match newly acquired vocabulary. Students will need to match and categorize the physical properties of

matter.

 What vocabulary will be introduced and how will it connect to students’ observations?

 - Grade and unit appropriate vocabulary will be introduced

 How is this knowledge applied in our daily lives?

 - You will use the vocabulary words you just learned and apply them in an expository writing piece.

EVALUATION
