Goal:
To develop understanding of the culture and art of the Nineteenth Century.
Lesson objectives addressed in this activity:
Students will be able to:
Develop a greater understanding of the culture and art of the Nineteenth Century through
reading and answering questions.
Teacher Instructions:
Assess the readiness Level of your students. It is time to assign this activity when:
o Students have read Chapter 17 of Living with Art from page 425 to page 428
and Chapter 21 from page 490 to page 505.
o Students have participated in a discussion of the material in Chapters 17 and 21
and comprehension is evident.
Prepare for this activity:
Review the lesson objectives that will be addressed in this activity with your students.
Assessment of learning:
o Review the student copy of the grading rubric with your students, so that they are
clear on the outcome expectations.
o Have each student submit a copy of the rubric along with the assignment. Circle the
level of competency met for each criterion, and then write the total score at the top of
the rubric. Return the scored rubric along with the assignment to each student.
Questions on the Nineteenth Century
Assignment: Answer the following questions.
1. What three revolutions ushered in the Modern Age?
2. What was the first national museum? When and how did it get started?
3. Manet was the most controversial artist in France in the 1860’s. His painting
Luncheon on the Grass was considered scandalous both visually and in terms of subject
matter. What two goals did Manet hope to accomplish with this work? The public did not
like this painting. What were their objections? (2 pts. last question)
Criteria for success:
1. Review Chapter 17 of Living with Art from page 425 to page 428 and Chapter 21 from
page 490 to page 505.
2. Review the grading rubric before beginning this activity. Note that you will be scored on
how well you meet the listed lesson objectives.
3. Put your name on the rubric and hand it in with a copy of the questions and your answers
for this activity.
