AP Chemistry syllabus
2011-2012
Mr. Longorio
In order to have a productive day, you will need to bring the following materials:
1. 2 notebooks: one will be for class notes and the other for your lab notebook.
a. For your lab notebook, I recommend a composition notebook. It is smaller and more durable than a spiral notebook.
b. It is important that your lab notebook be separate from your notes in order for you to receive college lab credit when you
attend a college/university. Your professor will ask to see it if you wish to use this class to exempt. A good lab notebook will
allow you to at least exempt a college lab regardless of your score on the AP test.
2. Graphing calculator (optional – I will provide a calculator in the classroom, but you will need one for homework, labs, etc.)
a. You may use any scientific calculator, however the TI-84 (silver edition) is the best option for your money and it has some
assistance built into the calculator for chemistry.
3. Pens, pencils, highlighters, colored pencils, etc. (whatever it takes to take productive and usable notes for studying purposes)
4. Textbooks
a. You will be assigned a textbook for your homework and studying purposes. I will also have a class set of textbooks that is
not to leave my classroom. If you plan on doing your chemistry assignments at school, you will need to bring your book with
you.
Class Rules:
1. Bring all materials to class every day. Have all necessary materials out and ready at the start of class. You will NOT be able to
leave class to get any materials from another teacher’s class or anywhere else you might have left your materials.
2. DO NOT bring any food or drink within my classroom, unless specifically instructed to do so by me.
3. Do NOT get out or apply make-up in class- this includes brushing/fixing your hair and other methods of grooming yourself and
personal hygiene. (It is called a home or restroom activity- not classroom)
4. Follow all instructions given to you by me.
5. Have the utmost respect for yourself, your fellow students, and me at all times.
6. Follow all rules described for you in the student handbook.
Consequences for failing to comply with Class Rules:
1. Verbal Warning.
2. Student conference
3. Parent contact (phone or e-mail)
4. Parent/teacher conference
5. Office referral
Operation Start on Time:
1. You will wear your name badge at all times while at Goose Creek Memorial High School. If you are seen without it, you will be told to
report to the sweep station for the appropriate consequence.
2. You will not write, draw, or cover the picture on the badge with anything else. If you do this, you will be told to report to the sweep
station for the appropriate consequence.
3. You will adhere to the Goose Creek Memorial High School dress code. If you violate this code, you will be told to report to the sweep
station for the appropriate consequence.
4. If you are not in the classroom when the first bell rings, you will report to the sweep station for the appropriate consequence.
5. If you are seen running down the hall, you will be told to go back down the hall and continue to walk to class. If you are late because of
this, you will report to the sweep station for the appropriate consequence.
a. Manage your time between classes. Don’t let socializing with your friends cause you to be late.
Dress Code:
Mr. Richard and the GCM administration will explain to you the expected dress while you attend this school. Failure to adhere to this
code will result in the appropriate consequence. This is a school policy and it is part of my contract with this school and its community to
enforce it.
Leaving the room:
This is an AP class, which is intended to simulate a college environment. You are mature, intelligent young adults and are expected to use
the time between classes wisely to manage your business. While in my class, I will not allow you to leave for random bathroom breaks. If
you are not my classroom, you are not learning chemistry. I only have you for a limited time each day, and expect you to work from the
beginning bell to the dismissal bell. However, if there is an emergency that requires you leaving my classroom, you should approach me in
confidence and justify your emergency prior to me allowing you to leave.
Grading Policy:
Major grades (from 2 to 3 per six weeks) – 60%
*These may consist of written tests, projects, research papers, and presentations.
Homework – 10%
Quizzes – 10%
Labs – 20%
Absences:
If you miss any classes, you will need to get notes from one of your classmates or see me after school. I will provide you with any
handouts that I give the class in the folders on the wall near the door. Although I will be able to assist you with any questions over the
topics you missed, you will not be able to do any hands-on activities, which are very important for students to fully grasp the content. SO
DON’T BE ABSENT!!! If you are absent for any reason, I expect you to attend tutorials and catch up on what you’ve missed.
Tutorials:
I will be available during the following times:
1. From 6:45 - 7:00 each morning for quick answers (e.g.- that one question you couldn’t figure out on your homework).
2. Tuesday afternoon from 2:45 – 4:30; Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:45 – 3:30 (if available)
3. If neither of the times stated above are suitable, contact me privately (not during class time) to set up an appointment for tutorials.
4. I am flexible and some of these days and times can be altered as needed.
Missed work:
If you are absent when an assignment is due, it is due the day you return. If you are absent the day it was assigned, you have an extra day
to complete the assignment. Failure to complete the assignment in the appropriate amount of time will result in deduction of points from the
assignment (See late work policy).
Late work:
Labs and major grades:
1 letter grade reduction for each day after the due date (up to 3 days).
After 3 days: automatic 0
Homework:
Late: automatic 0
Academic Honesty:
District policy requires that anyone who is caught cheating be given a zero on that item. This zero cannot be made up. Anyone caught
cheating will also be given a discipline referral to the office and his or her parents will be contacted.
*Cell phones: Students seen using a cell phone, whether holding it in their hand, purse, pocket, etc. will immediately have their phone
confiscated and a discipline referral for cheating will be written. WHEN YOU WALK INTO MY CLASS, MAKE SURE YOUR
PHONE IS OFF AND LEAVE IT ALONE UNTIL YOU LEAVE MY CLASS!
