CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS:
Our party, ‘Christmas on the Waterfront’, was celebrated with joy by an
animated crowd of nearly 80 seafarers and guests on December 24th. Ms.
Michelle DePooter and Fr. Alfred Chinniah conducted a candlelit
service of communion, lessons and carols, which was followed by a
Catholic service lead by Fr. Andrew Thavam.

Then everyone enjoyed the large and splendid selection of food, laid out
buffet-style on the snooker table. Most of the fare was provided by the Canadian Shipsupply &
Services Association (CSSA) and, thanks to their generosity, we were able to offer seasonal
treats throughout the holiday season. Ms. Brennan Huard helped cook five chickens and donated
and cooked a turkey, too. Mrs. Grace Couperus (with a little assistance) peeled and mashed 25lbs
of potatoes and carrots. Ms. Mei Mendoza and Mrs. Debbie Harman brought food to the feast
and Ms. Michelle DePooter made 732 cookies (nine different kinds) with the nimble assistance of
her husband, Mr. Donsavio Francis.

Once again, the indispensable Mr. and Mrs. George and Grace Couperus volunteered for the
whole month of December. They ensured that the centre was open on Christmas day, and that the
distribution of Christmas parcels was carried out in an orderly fashion.

Thanks to the many generous supporters of the Ministry to Seafarers and Mariners’ House, who
donated shoeboxes, food and and gifts, 1,550 seafarers were reminded that they were in the thoughts
of others. The following persons and companies donated a wonderful variety of gifts to seafarers

NEWS & ACTIVITIES:

o In September, Le Centre d’histoire de Montréal threw out a challenge to the journalists
of six local daily newspapers to follow up on something interesting happening in Old
Montreal . Each article would be illustrated as they used to be in 1870 and the
illustrator was Réal Godbout, whose talents are well-known in Quebec. The journalist,
Sylvie St-Jacques, decided to write a piece on Mariners’ House for the paper ‘La Presse’
and Mr. Godbout drew three lovely illustrations, of which one is reproduced below.
