World Languages Core Content – PreK – Grade 5
World Languages is learning to communicate in another language and to appreciate
other cultures.
Pre-K students will:
• Learn greetings and counting in a language other than their own
• Explore and appreciate other cultures.
In kindergarten, students will use the target language as they:
• Ask and respond to simple questions about familiar topics
• Participate in age appropriate cultural activities (i.e. songs, stories)
• Recognize and imitate familiar words
• Identify and label familiar items.
In grade one, students will use the target language as they:
• Use greetings
• Participate in age appropriate cultural activities (i.e. songs, stories)
• Recognize and imitate familiar words
• Ask and respond to simple questions about familiar topics.
In grade two, students will use the target language as they:
• Give and follow directions for classroom activities
• Participate in age appropriate cultural activities (i.e. songs, stories)
• Recognize and imitate familiar words
• Ask and respond to simple questions about familiar topics.
In grade three, students will use the target language as they:
• Use memorized phrases and short sentences to exchange information
• Write with guidance on familiar topics
• Read and understand short passages
• Explore cultural activities, traditions and uses of the target language in communities
and the world.
In grade four, students will use the target language as they:
• Engage in common classroom interactions
• Comprehend brief written and oral messages on familiar topics
• Write or tell peers about products and/or practices
• Compare simple patterns of behavior in various cultural settings.
In grade five, students will use the target language to:
• Understand and use vocabulary that is related to familiar topics
• Tell or retell stories orally or in writing through imitating or using familiar language
• Access information through a variety of sources, including internet, email, video and print materials
• Increase knowledge of vocabulary and language patterns in their own language by comparing the native
and target language.
