FIVE LESSONS FOR TEACHING ABOUT TECHNOLOGY



This week, Education World provides five lessons about technology. Click each of the headlines

below for a complete teaching resource. (Appropriate grade levels for each lesson appear in

parentheses.)



What’s Inside My Computer?

Students draw a picture of what they think a computer looks like inside. Then they explore more.

(Grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, advanced)



Mousing Around

Practice using a mouse and complete a mouserobics scavenger hunt. (Grades PreK, K-2, 3-5)



Word Processing Can Be Lots of Font!

A fun poem activity helps reinforce basic word processing skills. (Grades 3-5, 6-8)



Finding Your Way in the World Wide Web

A fun grouping activity teaches about databases. Then students test kid-friendly search engines

to find the best one. (Grades 3-5, 6-8)



There’s a Monster in My E-Mail!

In this simple collaborative e-mail project, students make new friends as they practice their

drawing, writing, and computer skills. (Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12)

 Creating and Presenting Haiku With Kid Pix (Grades 3-5)

Students use KidPix as they develop original haikus.



 Computers at Work (Grades 9-12)

Explore careers in the computer field.



 My First PowerPoint Presentation (Grades K-2, 3-5)

Students create their first PowerPoint presentation.

 Web Trails: An Online Adventure (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

Complete a WebQuest about exploring Iowa’s parks.



 Primary Keyboarding Skills (Grades K-2)

Introduce younger students to keyboarding.



 Use Boolean Search Terms to Shorten Web Searches (Grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-12)

Explore the advantages of using Boolean search terms for Internet searches.



 True or False: A Lesson in Web Literacy (Grades 9-12)

Students learn how to evaluate the reliability of a Web site’s content.



 Evaluating Web Sites for Bias (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

Students evaluate a Web site about Dr. Martin Luther King for bias.



 Jo Cool or Jo Fool? (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

This "online game about savvy surfing" from the Media Awareness Network includes an

extensive Teacher Guide.



 Rules in Cyberspace (Grades 3-5, 6-8)

This lesson plan on hacking and copyright violations includes links to cyberethics sites for

kids.



 M&Ms (Grades K-6)

Students create a spreadsheet showing how many M&Ms of each color are in a single

bag.



 WYSIWYG (Grades 6-12)

How do you know if a Web site is legitimate?



 Grandmother and Me (Grades1-9)

Students from around the world participate in an e-mail project in which they tell the word

for grandmother in their language, describe things they do (or did) with their

grandmothers, and write a collaborative story about grandmothers.



 Grade 6 Cool Sites (Grades 3-9)

Visit several Web sites and write a critique of the most interesting site.



 Geo Game (Grades 3-8)

Students participate in a collaborative online project in which they help create and solve

geography puzzles.



 Spreadsheet Lesson Plan (Grades 3-5, 6-8)

Learn how to use a spreadsheet to enter data and perform calculations.
