I have several instructional goals for this project. The basic goal is for my
students to learn the seven continents and four oceans. They will also be expected to
follow my virtual field trip, watch the videos, and complete short quizzes for each stop.
This fieldtrip is one section of a Web Quest that my students complete. The final project
for the Web Quest is a PowerPoint describing their own virtual fieldtrip. My goal is that
they not only learn map skills and how to use technology, but also that they learn about
other cultures.
I have used the Web Quest portion of this project for several years, but this will
be the first time I have used Google Earth. My Web Quest can be found at
http://pages.mhlearningnetwork.com/tarman/id21.html. The students begin with some
websites that show the different continents and oceans. They will journey through my
virtual fieldtrip. The stops are based on novels the class has read this year or places we
have studied. Each stop has videos to watch and a quiz to take. The students also have a
worksheet to fill out. Latitude, longitude, interesting facts, miles traveled, and a basic
description will be recorded. The disciplined mind is ready to move to the synthesizing
mind.
It is time for the students to create their own virtual fieldtrip. They will use
Google Earth to locate their destinations, interesting facts, and distance traveled. The
students will record this information on a blank worksheet. This information will be used
to create a PowerPoint showing their virtual fieldtrip. Students will present these Power
Points to their classmates. The synthesizing and possibly the creative mind have been
developed. Ethical and respectful behavior is modeled and expected in my classroom at
all times.
There are many chances for the respectful and ethical mind to emerge. When
students are given an opportunity to experience other beliefs and cultures, the possibility
for respect is approached. I believe that the reason behind disrespect and unethical
treatment is because of a lack of understanding. These children will be a part of a global
culture. It is important that they understand and respect other cultures. This will lead to
their ethical mind.

(Please note, some of the old links are still present on my Web Quest because I
have two students currently working on this project. Once I have shown the class how to
use Google Earth, I will remove the links that Google Earth will replace.) I have also
included the rubrics that I use for the students PowerPoint and the worksheet that the
students fill out as they complete their trip around the world. These documents have been
added for clarity purposes only.
