TIPS FOR USING WEEKLY AND MONTHLY LOGS

 Purpose:

 The weekly log is designed for literacy coaches to use as a record of their activities and as a way to

self-monitor. Because it includes space for teachers’ names, this log should be seen only by the

coach.

 The monthly log is designed for literacy coaches to use to document the kind and amount of work

they are doing. Administrators, program leaders, other coaches, and school leadership teams may

find it useful.

 On a weekly and a monthly basis, review the logs and ask yourself questions such as:

 Are there teachers or teams that I am not meeting with often enough?

 Are their certain topics that recur over and over again which might be good topics for large-group

professional development workshops?

 Have I spent too much time on any particular activity? (Monitor especially for too much time spent

with individual students—you are rarely coaching at those times—and in unnecessary meetings.)

 Am I putting in enough hours? Too many hours?

 What goals do I have for next week/next month?

 Keep detailed records of individual conferences, team conferences, demonstration lessons, and

meetings. Use these logs only to summarize.

 If you share these logs with principals or others who supervise teachers, be careful to include no

evaluative information about individual teachers.

 When a month ends mid-week, start a new monthly log for the rest of that week. (For instance, if

September ends on a Thursday, then the first week of your log for October will consist of only Friday,

October 1.)

 You may want to carry a clip board with you at all times. You can attach the weekly summary chart to

the clipboard. You can also carry a to-do list on the clip board.

 Coaches are encouraged to modify these forms to best meet their needs or the needs of those with

whom they work.
