Pastor’s Corner

For the past three weeks we have been listening to “The Bread of Life Discourse” in John’s Gospel that Jesus gave to the crowds. This week’s Gospel shows the response of the people to the climactic words Jesus uttered last week, “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” “Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said, ‘This saying is hard; who can accept it?’” This teaching of Jesus caused many of His disciples to walk away and return to their former way of life. Jesus’ response to these would be disciples is noteworthy. He does not back down from what He said, but instead, implies that His words have divine authority. People are free to accept or reject His teaching, but He will not water down the truth of His words to make them more appealing to human reasoning. He would rather see us wrestle with His words and come to full understanding of the truth. A recent article in the “Boston Globe” on perpetual adoration in Boston and the subsequent letters to the editor show that people still struggle with these words of Jesus regarding His Real Presence in the Eucharist, but for us Catholics, the Eucharist goes to the heart of our faith. Through the words of consecration spoken by the priest and the power of the Holy Spirit, bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ, who is sacramentally present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the simple elements of bread and wine. The Eucharist is a great mystery that can only be grasped through the eyes of faith. No matter how much or how little we understand this mystery, all of us receive the fullness of Jesus’ self-gift in the Eucharist. Through prayer and reflection coupled with God’s grace we deepen our understanding of the Eucharist and become transformed more and more into the likeness of Christ. We become what we eat, bread that is broken and blood that is poured out for the salvation of the world. The Eucharist nourishes us on our spiritual journey even as it urges us on to share the gift we have received, the good news of Jesus Christ. Through the liturgical readings these past several weeks, the Church has given us an opportunity to reflect on the great gift and mystery of the Eucharist. To deepen our love and appreciation of the Eucharist, our parish offers the ancient practice of Eucharistic Adoration every first Friday of the month following the daily Mass in the chapel and concluding with Evening Prayer and Benediction at 4:45 pm. Come and spend time with our Eucharistic Lord and discover that His words are truly Spirit and life. Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Cannon

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS God, source of creation and love, you invite each of us to serve you through the gift of our life. May your grace encourage men and women to serve the church as priests, sisters, brothers and lay ministers. Make me an instrument to encourage others to give of themselves and challenge me to do the same. Amen. WOULD YOU PRAY FOR A PRIEST EACH DAY? The Monthly Prayer Request for Priests (MPRP) is an international apostolate which was founded in 1990 to encourage people to support Catholic priests by prayer and sacrifice. Each diocese prays for its own priests. Each day of the year bears the name of a priest from that diocese, obtained from the diocesan directory. Thus, by means of a calendar, the faithful are united in offering prayer and sacrifice for the particular “priest of the day,” always remembering to include a general intention of prayer for all priests of the diocese and around the world. The August and September MPRP calendars for the Archdiocese of Boston are available in the entrances of the church and chapel. Won’t you join in praying for a priest a day?
