KSU Keys
1) We're Living Here in Allen's Town- Punt return specialist David Allen averages 22.4
yards per return and has four-touchdowns. UT punter David Leaverton has
been inconsistent. That is a formula that bodes well for KSU.
2) Bishop takes Rook- Wildcat QB Michael Bishop won't have to contend with the
Heisman Jinx (he finished second to Texas's Ricky Williams). There is
no more valuable player to his team in the country than the KSU senior
signal-caller. He has been brilliant all season with his leadership and
ball-control (only three-interceptions). If he connects on one or two
big passes (40+ yards), it may be enough for a National Crown.
3) Primary Concern is Secondary- Texas A & M QB Brandon Stewart exposed a youthful
KSU secondary in the Big-12 Title game. With two sophomores, a junior and
a freshman in the defensive backfield, UT QB Tee Martin (58.7% completions)
can make a lot of Vols' fans forget about Peyton Manning with a big night in
Tempe.
UT Keys
1) Corner the Market- CBs Dwayne Goodrich and Steve Johnson are asked to play
a lot of man coverage, while the Vols' LBs put pressure on opposing
quarterbacks. They need to play tough against KSU's receivers;
especially when Bishop scrambles out of the pocket.
2) Just for Kicks- This matchup features two of the nation's premier place-kickers in
Martin Grammatica (KSU) and Jeff Hall (UT). Grammatica has the
bigger leg (65-yard field goal during the season), but Hall's accuracy
and ability in the clutch (last-second game-winner vs. Syracuse and
overtime kick against Florida) may win the evening for the Vols.
3) Paper Schmaper- On paper, KSU wins every significant statistical category. That's
misleading because UT plays in the stronger conference and took on out-of-
conference foes Syracuse, Houston, and UAB, while the 'Cats were battling
fly-weights Indiana State, Northern Illinois, and Northeast Louisiana. The
Vols will not be intimidated or overwhelmed by anything KSU does on
the field.

Reversal of Fortune - 1998 Kansas State
Where to start? In Kansas State's 1998 Big-12 Championship contest versus
Texas A & M, the Wildcats were in control and on their way to the National Title
game. UCLA had been upset by Miami (FL) 49-45 earlier in the day, clearing the
path for KSU.
But on the way to Tempe, the Wildcats choked-up and allowed the Aggies
to escape with a gut-wrenching, 36-33 double-overtime victory, effectively ending
KSU's shot at a crown.
In every competitive game there are five or six plays which can decide the
outcome. Here are a few that led to Kansas State's demise:
1) Kansas State held a 27-12 advantage in the final quarter and was still ahead
27-19 late in the fourth, when KSU stopped Texas A & M on downs near
midfield with over three-minutes to go. Three KSU rushes and a punt would have
left A & M with very little time and the length of the field to drive trailing by eight-
points. Instead, after a rushing play on first-down, KSU called for a deep-pass
that fell incomplete, stopping the clock. On third-down, QB Michael Bishop
fumbled, A & M recovered, then marched 35-yards for the tying touchdown
and two-point conversion with 1:05 remaining.
2) On the final play of regulation, eschewing a long field goal attempt by PK Martin
Grammatica, KSU threw a Hail-Mary that WR Everett Burnett hauled in…two-yards
short of the Aggies' end zone, sending the game to overtime.
3) In the second overtime, KSU held a 33-30 lead and had A & M in trouble facing
a third-and-17 at the Wildcats' 32. Aggie QB Brandon Stewart drilled RB Sirr Parker
with a seven-yard slant-pass, that the A & M speedster turned into a 32-yard,
game-winning touchdown.
Put any one of those above mentioned plays or events in KSU's favor, and they
win the game and the right to play Tennessee for the National Championship.

Tee Martin's 12-yard touchdown pass to Peerless Price with nine-seconds left, gave
the Tennessee Volunteers a stirring, 35-31 comeback victory over Kansas State in
last night's National Championship game at the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona.
One month earlier, KSU watched Texas A & M storm back from a 27-12 fourth
quarter deficit to force overtime in the Big-12 title game, but the Wildcats pulled
out the win, 33-30 in double overtime.
Last night, Kansas State saw the Vols comeback twice from double-digit deficits.
The Wildcats jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, before UT got untracked
and tied it at 14 with 7:57 remaining in the first half.
KSU's Eric Hickson put the 'Cats up 21-14 at halftime after he scored on a
one-yard plunge with 1:50 left in the second quarter.
In the third, Tennessee drove 69-yards in nine-plays and scored on an 11-yard
Martin with 9:19 to go.
PK Jeff Hall pulled the extra-point wide-left to leave the tally at 21-20, Wildcats.
Three series later, KSU QB Michael Bishop marched the Wildcats to a touchdown:
a six-yard pass to Darnell McDonald that elevated Kansas State's advantage to
28-20 with 2:34 showing on the clock in the third.
KSU's Martin Grammatica tacked on three points with a 40-yard field goal to make
it 31-20.
Only 10:39 separated Kansas State from a National Championship.
The Volunteers followed with a 12-play, 73-yard touchdown series covering on a
fourth down early in the possession. Facing a fourth-and-one at their own 28,
Martin drew Kansas State offside to give the Vols a first down. The excursion ended
when Martin hit Cedrick Wilson for a third-down, 17-yard touchdown.
Travis Henry rammed in a two-point conversion run to pull UT to within three at
31-28 with 5:02 to go.
Kansas State gathered a couple of first downs on the ensuing drive, but punted
from the Volunteers' 42 on fourth-and-four.
James Garcia's kick sailed into the end zone for a touchback.
With 80-yards of gridiron, two-timeouts, 109 seconds and KSU's defense in
facing them, Tennessee's offense took the field for it's last chance at victory.
An 11-yard run by Henry was followed by a 10-yard reception by Jermaine
Copeland, then a 20-yard Henry scamper.
An incomplete pass stopped the clock with :55 seconds remaining.
With the Wildcats still guarding against the pass, the Vols crossed them up
with a draw to Henry who raced 15-yards to the KSU 24.
A four-yard reception by Price was followed by a Vols' timeout with :36 to go.
An incomplete pass toward Wilson left UT with a third-and-six at the Kansas
State 20 and only :30 seconds left.
Henry got the call again and bolted eight-yards for a first down to the Wildcats' 12.
Martin spiked the ball, stopping the clock at :20 seconds with only one timeout
left.
A quick-slant to Price was batted away by KSU's Dyshod Carter leaving :16
seconds on the clock.
That's when Martin found Price in the back, left-half of the end zone after scrambling
away from the Wildcats' Damion McIntosh's pressure up the middle.
KSU had one last chance on a Hail-Mary attempt with :02 seconds left, but the
ball fell incomplete, giving Tennessee the title.
