Reverend’s Reflections Late Summer 2009
Dear People of St. Luke’s:
I’m excited about the start of the new academic calendar year, and I hope you are as well. What’s in store here at St. Luke’s? The news and thoughts that follow come under the general topic of “In-Reach” (versus out-reach) and “Self-Care.” First, in my four years here the profile of outreach—helping others outside of St. Luke’s who are in need—has taken on extraordinary life. We will continue supporting our once a month community dinner, volunteering at various soup kitchens, the Youth Outreach projects, and the various drives for food and winter clothing needed by our neighbors. New efforts at church will turn toward in-reach, spiritual nurture, building of community. In-Reach and Community Building: Look for a bulletin board map display of our local area. Here’s the request: that you or a child of yours locate your house on the map (it’s going to be a really big map), and put a marker we’ll provide for that purpose—and sign the accompanying map-legend. This will give us an interesting look at how we are spread out or clumped together in Scituate and surrounding towns. What do you think of the idea of an informal afternoon or evening gathering of the neighbors who are parishioners? Cooking lessons by our parish experts. Chip Dongara, Italian chef extraordinaire, will be offering a short course of Italian cooking this fall. Space will be limited; an enrollment fee will be charged. Wait for further announcements. Similar classes of other cuisines are in the works. Want to know what wine to serve with your holiday dinners? The Weinery will bring suggestions to St. Luke’s the evening of Saturday, November 14th. Space not limited, fee charged to cover costs. Sign up will appear in October. Adult Education From time to time adult education classes have been offered between the 8 and 10 a.m. services. For the coming year there will be short courses offered at that time—perhaps alternating with classes which will meet after the 10 a.m. service for those for whom that time works better. Child care will be provided. Please let me know if that later time is especially appealing to you (contingent of course on the topic and other scheduling demands). The first class will be The Old Testament: Sorting through the Bad Press. Centering Prayer Do you long for a respite from the noise and demands of life? Starting Tuesday, September 15th, all are invited to a time of quiet reflection, prayer, silence, sometimes quiet background music. We’ll start at 6:30 p.m. with a short spiritual reflection. By 6:45 we will have a sustained time of silence and centered prayer. At 7:15 simple prayers will wrap up the evening by 7:20. Meeting in the Gordon Room (the ‘living room’). Blessings on you, Grant

End of Life Issues, Your Medical and Spiritual Care
The health care debates seem to bring more heat than light. Certainly our awareness has been raised around
issues of end of life challenges. I’ve been at the hospital bedside of more people in dire circumstances than I recall. Sometimes the situation has been quite unexpected—a massive infection in someone already compromised by other health or agerelated issues or a large stroke. As loved ones gather and the doctors and nurses do all they can, family members start wondering if their loved one would really like to have their lives sustained even if it meant living with significant impairment, and that after a long slog of treatment to stabilize them. Here is what everyone needs to have on file at home, with a copy at their attorney’s office and one with a close family member (and at church too if you’d like): 1. A medical proxy, or person assigned to make medical decisions for you in the event that you can not, someone with durable medical power of attorney. And then you need to talk to that person and be very, very specific regarding what situations you want aggressive medical treatment, and when you would want to be let go to die. 2. A living will. This is a less binding document…so again you want to communicate clearly with those who will make decisions on your behalf should you die. For example, hospitals will ask your survivors if you wish to donate any organs; for those who have lived long, long lives and dealt with a major illness, eyes and skin are still possible organs for ‘re-use.’ Even if your driver’s license designates you as an organ donor, the medical people will ask your closest relative for permission to harvest any organs. A living will helps you direct for them and the doctors what your wishes are. Tell your loved ones what your preference is as well. Finally, all of these decisions really are about life and hope. We want life as long as we can have it here on earth. As Christians we also believe that hope and life extend into the life to come.

We ask that parishioners provide salads (last name begins with A-M) and desserts (last name starts with N—Z). Beverages, hamburgers and hot dogs provided. If you don’t or can’t bring a dish to share, we still want you– your presence is more important that the food you might bring, and there is always enough to go around. Help with set up and clean up is also a welcome alternative to bringing a salad or dessert. See you there!

W ELCOME TO S T . L UKE ’ S C HRISTIAN E DUCATION
Dear Families, Welcome to St. Luke’s Christian Education program. This letter provides just a brief overview of our programs. Please see our Christian Education booklet for more information, specific dates and contact information. Our Christian Education program is overseen by the Christian Education Committee, and chairperson Darlene Foley. We welcome new members to the committee. We also welcome Sunday school teachers and substitute teachers. We offer Christian education for children in preschool through high school. Classes meet during the 10:00 a.m. service. The confirmation class meets from 11:30-12:30 on specific Sundays. We have a staffed nursery room for children who are too young to attend class or who wish to have a more relaxed Sunday morning. Parent volunteer are needed, there is a sign up sheet on the nursery door. We know that your child will receive a wonderful religious education with our amazing teachers and great curriculums. The pre-k through 6th grade (with the exception of 2nd grade) uses the “David Cook Bible in Life” curriculum. The 2nd grade concentrates on learning about The Holy Eucharist with the “Life in the Eucharist” workbook and “Alleluia Amen”. Grades 7th and 8th will use “Living the God News” curriculum. The 9th grade is our confirmation class. Children in grade pre-k through 1st will continue to take part in the “Little Service” held on Sundays just prior to classroom time. Older children will join their families in the church service for communion. Special topics such as Advent, Lent, and the Episcopal Church will be integrated into the curriculum. Some grades will also have the opportunity to go to the Life Care Center to assist with the Sunday morning service. Youth Outreach is an integral part of our Christian Education program. This year we have a few changes to the program. First, we give many thanks to Karen Hirsh for her many years of dedication as Youth Outreach Coordinator. Her vision has created a wonderful program. This year we welcome Stacey Stratton as our new Youth Outreach Coordinator. This year’s motto is “Start Local, Go Global!” Children in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 2 will focus their outreach efforts on helping the Scituate Animal Shelter. The 3rd through 6th graders will again support the Scituate Food Pantry and this year will also support Father Grant’s sabbatical to Ecuador. The 7th grade and up will continue their mission of helping the homeless by serving meals at St. Paul’s table and the Long Island Shelter. We are looking for volunteers to help make our outreach program a success. There are also other exciting opportunities for the children. The children will have the chance to participate in a heart-warming Epiphany pageant. Our Advent and Palm Sunday workshops provide a fun way to learn more about these special times of the church year. Children in 2nd grade and up can become members of the Angel choir while older children can join the Young Adult Choir. Children in grade 6 and up can become acolytes and assist at the Sunday service. Confirmed teenagers are welcomed as classroom assistants, nursery assistants, and helpers for special events. Our youth groups are for grades 7th grade and up. Each of our youth groups will meet throughout the year. Janine Beal is our Youth Group Coordinator. We are looking for volunteers to help make this program a success. It is our hope that your child will grow spiritually, learn more about the Episcopal Church and feel a strong sense of belonging in our church family….all while having fun, forming friendships, and making a difference in the lives of others. Youth Outreach Update
I hope this finds everyone enjoying their summer vacations, and finally some sunshine. I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself as the new Youth Outreach Coordinator. After 6 years, Karen Hirsh decided to step down as coordinator – you will be seeing her in church more often now. A huge thank you to Karen for all of her hard work. For the last few years, I have been teaching Sunday school to our younger members of St. Luke’s. My husband and I came to St. Luke’s right after our second son was born in 2005. We now have 3 boys who are in various classrooms in our Sunday school program. I am very excited to begin a new journey here at St. Luke’s with the Youth Outreach program. We plan to continue with many of the same outreach projects this year. We will put some focus on Father Grant’s sabbatical to Ecuador with a few new concentrations in our Youth Outreach program. Our Youth Outreach kickoff will be on October 18th, which also happens to be St. Luke’s Day. We have many exciting ideas and events scheduled for the kids. With that comes a request for volunteers to help out with our outreach program. There are 4 outreach days during the Sunday school year. A Special Thank You From the Scituate Food Pantry...
7/1/09 Dear Karen, I hope that somehow during the summer you will be able to express to the kids at your church our profound thanks for the Youth Outreach donation of $1708.00. What an absolutely tremendous gift to the Food Pantry! It will go a long way in underwriting our monthly payment for the vouchers we distribute to each family. The children at St. Luke’s are living proof that kindness and understanding can go a long way. Each and everyone of his or her self should be rightfully proud for their excellent efforts to help others. This heart warming generosity will be duly posted on our bulletin board for all to see. VESTRY UPDATE:
The Vestry met once this summer on August 11th. We began our meeting with Evening Devotions. Property topics that were discussed included the electrical supply to the sewage pump at the church, adding more smoke detectors to the church, obtaining estimates for tree removal and the replacement of glass at the end of Dutton Hall, and working with consultants from the Diocese to determine our best options for replacing the furnaces at the church, and the possibility of adding air conditioning. We have two organizations that are considering renting Dutton Hall. One is an Adult Day Care program and the other offers various programs for youth. The Stewardship Campaign will kick-off this year on Sunday, September 20th and conclude Sunday, October 18th. We are shooting for 170 pledges, up from 120 this year. The Capital Campaign for 2010 continues to evolve. We will be interviewing two possible consultants to guide us in this process. Garin Arevian and Mark Buckley have agreed to assist with the Capital Campaign. Susanna The Harvest Fair will be held Saturday, November Dietz and Maureen Keys have agreed to chair this major event again! We are very grateful for their commitment. Sunday School begins Sunday, September 13th followed by a congregational picnic. The Vestry sponsors the picnic. All are welcome!

2010 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN
The Stewardship Committee, chaired by Mark Bast and Chris Dietz, has announced the dates of the campaign for 2010. It will begin on Sunday, September 20th and end on Sunday, October 18th. The Campaign determines the available financial resources and pool of volunteer talent for the coming year. The committee hopes to increase to 170 for 2010 the number of pledging households from the current 120. You will be hearing from the committee initially by mail in mid September. Please consider how you can start, continue, or increase your financial support to St. Luke’s.

ST. LUKE'S HARVEST FAIR
Saturday, November 7th
Here at St. Luke’s when the calendar turns to August, thoughts turn to our Harvest Fair, not only the largest fund raiser for our church, but one of the major ways in which, each autumn, we reconnect and renew our friendship and sense of shared purpose. Our Fair's great success has always depended on a group effort, on nearly everyone joining in, taking on a job – large or small. Be sure to be a part of it all when preparations begin. We will have our first Harvest Fair meeting after the 10am service on Sunday, September 20th. Grab your ice cream & coffee and join us in the Gordon Room. If you have any questions, or would like to join one of the subcommittees, please contact Maureen Keys (545-1348, morehalp@comcast.net) or Susanna Dietz (5456109, Susyqq545@aol.com). You can even start to help now in these ways: Our fabulous gift baskets require lots of things in terms of both filler goodies and the packaging for them; so start collecting baskets, wide (wired) ribbon, cellophane, excelsior and packing “peanuts”, as well as items with a theme – our basket team will create very appealing gift baskets from your donations. Consider joining our sewing team – working on your own, or “sewcializing” with Joan Powers and crew at the church on Wednesdays at 1pm. Joan is also looking for new ideas for creative sewing projects. Our crafters would appreciate collecting any Michael’s, Jo-Ann’s or A.C. Moore coupons that show up in your Sunday circulars and you cannot use yourself. Remember to bring them in right away; they’re only good for a week! We’re always eager to add “crafty” people to our group; we’ll be running some crafting sessions on Wednesday evenings at church and also welcome projects made at home. Contact Susanna (as above) for more information. Summertime is also time to use all those wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables for your favorite pickled, preserved or brandied items to help fill our “Country Store”. This booth features homespun, folksy items of all kinds so if preserves aren’t your style, but you’re a woodworker, soap or candlemaker or you have a green thumb, please get to work on your own specialty project. Finally, and very importantly for our publicity, please call Maureen or Susanna right away to tell us about your Silent Auction donation, so that we can feature some of these in our media announcements. High interest items – especially sports tickets or memorabilia, antiques, vacation weeks or weekends, works of art, fine jewelry, services (cooked meals, yard work, legal, etc.) can help us draw in the crowd. We’re looking forward to sharing the fun of Fair preparations with you. Newcomers to St. Luke’s will find that joining in the work for the Fair is the quickest, easiest way to feel right at home and part of the St. Luke’s family .
