Week 1: Getting Started
1. getting hooked up (short video clip)
2. explore the basic tools (the tool bar)
a. SMART Notebook Tutorial
i. go to Help on the top menu
ii. choose Tutorial (a new notebook page will open and the tutorial will load)
1. scroll through the tutorial by clicking on the blue arrow at the
top of the page
b. SMART Two-Minute Tutorials
i. Touch, Write and Save
c. this week, explore using the regular pens and the creative pens on
any of your projected lesson activities
d. use the magic pen to magnify one section (draw a square around the
area) or to spotlight an area (draw a circle around an area)
e. you may also want to play with the highlighter on the side bar

Week 2: SMART Tools
1. create a file, in your documents, called SMART Notebook Content
2. choose an activity to complete on a Notebook page: brainstorming, math lesson,
practice questions etc. (something you might want to save)
3. SMART Tools: check out the tool bar at the top of the SMART Notebook content
a. the blind
b. save a page to your SMART Notebook file
c. print a page
d. add a page
4. use these tools in your teaching and save several pages in your SMART Notebook file
Week 3: The Gallery
1. The Gallery: over the next four weeks, explore the SMART software
a. go to Gallery Essentials (or Educator’s Essentials)
b. open Administration and Evaluation: (the + means that there are sub files)
c. see the visual below
d. scroll down the bar beside the resources, double click on any resource and
play with it

Week 4: The Gallery continued
2. The Gallery:
a. go to Gallery Essentials (or Educator’s Essentials)
b. open English and Language Arts (click on the +)
c. try the following three activities (to explore types of SMART software):
i) Modelling: open Handwriting (click the downward black arrow) > Letters –
lowercase > Backgrounds and then Themes (down below in the resources
section)
- open one of the worksheets, use to model printing, handwriting, page
set up etc.
ii) Interactives: open Grammar > Adjectives and view the Interactive
Multimedia presentation (you may choose to share this with your class)
iii) Picture Files: scroll down and open Storytelling > Fairy Tales > Three Little
Pigs - drag the characters over to the white page
a. retell the story using the pictures to show the sequence
b. did you run out of room on the page? click on Extend Page found at
the bottom
c. try this activity as a way to rewrite the story with your students,
develop oral story telling skills, to explore beginning, middle, end
story features
Week 5: The Gallery continued
3. The Gallery:
a. go to Gallery Essentials
b. open Mathematics
c. try the following three activities under Mathematics (to once again explore
types of SMART software):
i) Modelling: open Number Concepts and Operations > Place value
a. Notebook Files and Pages (down below in the resources section)
b. open a pages, use to model place value and reading/writing numbers
ii) Interactives: open > Statistics and Probability > Dice
a. drag a couple of dice over to the blank page
b. roll (use to add, multiply, explore probability etc.) note: some of the
dice say the number (choose English or French)
iii) Picture Files: open General Resources > Currency > Canadian
a. drag over a nickel
b. click on the nickel and then again on the down arrow
c. click on ‘clone’ or ‘Ctrl+D’, do this several times (with the down
arrow, you can also choose ‘infinite cloner’ so that you can just keep
pulling off a new coin)
d. use these for skip counting, counting change, multiplication, division
etc.
Week 6: The Gallery continued
1. The Gallery: Geography Maps
a. go to Gallery Essentials
b. open Maps > North America > Canada
c. open the Notebook Files and Pages (drag one to a new page)
d. open the pictures: move the provinces and territories into the correct position
and mark the capital cities
Week 7: Going Deeper….the technical pieces
1. Orienting the board: press down the two buttons on the front of the SMART Board
2. calibration: the magnification must be down to zero before you are able to calibrate
the board correctly
Week 8: Lesson Activity Toolkit 2.0….premade materials
1. go to Lesson Activity Toolkit 2.0
2. go to Examples > Activities
a. in the Notebook Files and Pages
i. open and play with each activity
ii. choose one that you would like to use to make your own class activity
Week 9: Lesson Activity Toolkit 2.0….making your own
1. go to Lesson Activity Toolkit 2.0
2. go to Activities and choose the type of activity you want to create for your class
3. click on the type, choose edit and then create (save in your Notebook Content)
Week 10: Play a game….or two
1. go to Lesson Activity Toolkit 2.0
2. go to Games > Board games
a. play a board game
i. go to Board games (play using the pens)
ii. go to Checkers (choose pieces to play with an above board or choose a
checkerboard with the men already on it)
iii. go to chess (choose you board colour and angle)
b. or do a crossword (create your own as well)
c. or play Dominos
d. or play Sudoku
Week 11: Possibilities
1. go to Lesson Activity Toolkit 2.0 to explore examples of different interactive task
models that you can edit to fit your needs
2. explore one example: choose examples > activities
3. choose Hot spots 1 from the Notebook Files and Pages (explore the activity)
Week 12: Record a Lesson
1. open up a your lesson Notebook page
2. click on settings in sidebar ‘Customize’ button
3. Choose ‘Recorder’
4. Drag it to the sidebar
5. double click on the recorder and a small box will open
6. When you are ready, click the red record button. You should see the clock ticking up.
7. click the blue square to stop
8. a Save As box will appear so that you can save it for accessing later
9. once saved, you have the choice to Play Recording… which will let you view your
recorded lesson now
* you can also add ‘Record’ to your Notebook tool bar (View > Customize Toolbar)
Week 12: Copying Your Word Document onto a Notebook page
1. use a Snipping Tool (under Accessories) to snip the page or section you want
2. copy
3. paste onto your Notebook page
