Pastoral Team Meeting
The Pastoral team meet in school on Tuesday 8th June and we had a very
good meeting. Altogether there are eight of us on the team including Stan and
myself. If you feel you have a little time (or a lot of time) occasionally to visit
throughout the parish then do speak to me or come along to our next meeting
on Tuesday 27th July at 7.30 p.m. in school. You will be very welcome.
In Church we have cards anyone can complete to let me know when
someone is ill. If these are either handed to me or put in with the offering that
will help me to know who is ill or would like a home visit. Please use the cards
as often as you wish; it is better to be told by different people when someone is
ill rather than not to be told at all.
Many thanks and best wishes, Bill
Magazine material to Honey Penrose or Stan Pickles by July 18th.

From The Rector
The holiday season is upon us and I can almost feel the deep sighing that
comes when we sit back in our favourite chair and relax into it. Relaxation is so
very important for us all. Relaxation refreshes the parts that even Heineken
cannot reach. Relaxation refreshes not only our body but our soul also. When we
become very tired or even exhausted we are unable to many of the things we are
normally able to do and of course that includes our daily walk with God.
The Bible has much to say about relaxation and refreshment and it begins at
the beginning in the Old Testament. In Genesis we read that even God rested. As
we progress through the Old Testament we quickly discover the numerous
references to rest and renewal and these usually (but not always) occurred one
day in every seven.
Rest and renewal comes in many disguises. For some it is simply having a lie
on one morning instead of having to get out of bed at 6.00 o’clock in the
morning. For others it is about sitting in the favourite chair with a book, for
others it is a good long walk or climbing a mountain. There are many ways to
relax and feel renewed, we are all different.
Our grandchildren spend a lot of time with us and can usually be heard
asking (or should that be complaining) nana and granddad, why do we have to
walk so much or have you read all the books in your study?
When the Israelites left Egypt to go to the Promised Land they walked
through the desert for forty years but during their wanderings they had frequent
times of rest. During these periods of rest they met with God usually in the
tabernacle which they had to erect and then dismantle for their continued
journey. Thankfully we have solid buildings in which we worship God. But the
Israelites had to carry theirs for forty years. Of course it was more like a big tent
than our Hoole Parish Church.
In the New Testament we discover that Jesus rested. To rest he went on his
own into the desert area and while he was resting he talked with God the Father.
This is, I think, an important part of our resting. When we set off on holiday we
may feel exceptionally tired or even exhausted and we know the rest from work
and the daily routines will do our body good; we will feel invigorated on our
return.
Wherever you go on holiday, you may be able to find a Church where you
can join with others to worship God. To join with others in worship is usually an
exhilarating experience as we worship in different ways to ours. Someone once
said to me, I don’t need to go to Church on holiday or at any other time to be a
Christian. (continued on page 4)
3
But this statement misses a crucial point. Christianity is a people in
community and meeting for worship is community in worship. Christianity isn’t
an individual religion it is a religion in community and when we go to another
Church while on holiday we experience even more of the community.
During these holiday months I would encourage you to reflect on Isaiah 40
verse 31 where we read:-
Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on
wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not
be faint.
Reflect on this verse each day and let God speak to you through it as you
wait on Him, our loving heavenly Father.
Yours in Christ,
Bill
Reading and Prayers in Church
As you know, we now have a list of people willing to read the lessons during
the 9.00 a.m. and the 10.45 a.m. Holy Communion each Sunday. If you are one
of the volunteers then thank you very much for your willingness to exercise this
ministry amongst us.
On the lists there are many places left for other volunteers and we are just
waiting for you to let me know you are willing to read or to lead the prayers.
If leading the prayers sounds daunting, I can assure you it isn’t. If you
volunteer I’ll gladly copy the week’s prayers for you and you could read them
adding in any prayers you wish to. If you are going to volunteer to read the
lessons then the Bible will be open and ready for you.
So as you can see it really isn’t daunting at all and in fact you would
probably really enjoy exercising this wonderful ministry amongst us.
So how do you get involved I hear you ask? Well, simply give me your
name, address and telephone number on a piece of paper and you’ll be added to
the list. Also you will need to indicate if you would prefer 9.00 a.m., 10.45 a.m.
or either. You will get your preference. Also indicate if you want to read, lead
prayers or both. It’s not as confusing as it sounds!!!
I am absolutely thrilled by the wonderful ministries already exercised
through Hoole Church and in the years ahead, as God leads us, I am absolutely
convinced that even more ministry will be exercised to the benefit of God’s
Church and the community.
Every blessing as you consider the ministry God has called you to.
Bill

God Our Rock
A new Bible Study course will start on Sunday 19th September in St
Michael’s Church. The course is very interesting covering topics ranging from
Old Testament study to the Church today with numerous really interesting topics
in between.
The God our Rock course has been running in Blackburn Diocese for many
years now and this year, 2010 witnesses one of the many rewrites the course has
undergone making it even more interesting and stimulating.
But who is the course for? Well, it is for everyone who wants to know more
about the Christian faith, what they believe and why. It is also for everyone who
is considering licensed ministry in the Church of England. Licensed ministry
includes, Pastoral Assistants, Readers and Clergy. It is the foundation course for
all three licensed ministries. So if you want to know more about the Christian
faith OR if you are considering licensed ministry the course is for you.
The course lasts from September to June. Generally we will meet weekly but
of course there will be no meeting during the holiday periods or during
December. I though we would meet from 6.30 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. but if at our
first meeting this time is unsuitable it can always be rearranged.
There is a cost for the course and it is £15 per term per person. This money
goes to Blackburn Diocese who produces the course materials and the booklet
for each person for each week. So the Diocese does put a lot of work into the
course and many people work together to make it as interesting as possible.
If you have any queries at all do ask me and I look forward to seeing you on
the 19th. By the way you will need a Bible with you and a pencil or pen if you
want to write anything down.

Ladies Group: The Garden Party on 12th June was a great success. The
weather was beautiful, lots of people attended the event, and all the stalls and
attractions were very successful. Our thanks go to all who supported, helped and
donated items and to everyone who came along on the afternoon. Over £900
was raised on the day , and the whole afternoon was a pleasant and happy
experience, enjoyed by all.
At our June Group meeting we were entertained "in-house" by Sylvia and
Les with an excellent presentation on their trip to South Africa. Lots of
interesting information and beautiful slides. Thank you to both and hear you've
also been to China ....Maybe another???
The Group does not have a meeting in July, but we look forward to meeting
up again on Tues. 17th August at 7.30 pm in school for a talk "Laughter - the
Best Medicine" by Dennis Moore. Hope to see you all there and remember,
visitors are always welcome.
Hope you all enjoy the Summer, Joan
Walking Day – Sunday July 18th at 3.00pm: This year the event takes place in
Much Hoole, and we ask you to meet at Hoole Methodist Church at 2.30pm.
We shall have a Hymn and short prayer in church at 2.45pm before moving off
at 3.00pm. The route will be as in previous years, ending up with tea in Hoole
Village Hall and we are looking for help to set up tables etc at 12.00noon. We
also request donated sandwiches and cakes for the tea which may be brought to
the village hall from 1.30pm prior to the walk, also we shall need help with
serving tea at 4.30pm.
For those unable to walk, a vintage bus will again be provided, which will
pick up passengers prior to the walk at Old Mill Court at 2.15pm and Hoole
Village Hall at 2.25pm. The event is brought to a close with our popular ‘Songs
of Praise’ led by Banks Brass Band and Carole at the organ, which commences
at approx. 5.30pm in the Village Hall. We hope that by now you will have
suggested your favourite hymn for inclusion.
Walking Day is the traditional way of presenting our churches to the
village, we need the support of all our church members to do this.
Diary Dates for July and early August
