GUIDE FOR CREATING ROCK CYCLE
STORIES USING INSPIRATION
Directions:
1. As a group, choose a scenario from below
to develop into a rock cycle story.
2. Using the story map diagram, work as a
group to draw out and explain the parts of your story. Start with the first
scene in the scenario.
3. Each story must use the phases of the rock cycle in the story and you must
underline each scientific term when used. Make sure to use these key
terms: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.
4. At the end of your story, your rock must be back in its original state.
5. After mapping out your story on paper, create an Inspiration map that
illustrates your story.
6. Write a story that narrates your Inspiration map. Each part of your rock
cycle story must include 2 or more complete sentences.
DEFINE THE FOLLOWING:
1. Igneous rocks…
2. Sedimentary rocks…
3. Metamorphic rocks…
AS A GROUP, CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS:
2
SCENARIO A:
You are a metamorphic rock sitting deep inside the earth’s crust. You are
surrounded by your brothers and sisters, and you have lived for many years under
layers and layers of dirt and rock, when all of a sudden . . . .
SCENARIO B:
You are an igneous rock—you are still steaming and hot—when all of a sudden. . .
SCENARIO C:
You are a sedimentary rock sitting all by yourself on the bottom of the ocean. You
just got picked up by a diver who takes you on her boat and later drops you on the
beach. It’s a really cool day on the beach when all of a sudden. . .
SCENARIO D:
Make up your own scenario here. . .
OUR EXAMPLE: Leaving My Volcano Home
I’m a Javier Magma flowing freely in the deepest part of a quiet volcano. I was just
hanging out—sliding here and swooshing there--with my brothers and sisters when
all of a sudden, everything starting shaking really hard. Some of my brothers and
sisters were pushed up in a rush by a huge ball of gas. I tried the best I could to
move out of the way, when all of a sudden a huge crack on the side of the volcano
(fissure) opened spilling me out like a taste of bad milk. There I was, out in the
open for the very first time in my life. Everything was so cold out and wet. A cool
rain starting to fall all over making me move more and more slowly. I started to
change color from my beautiful hot red to a dull cool purple. Little holes started to
form all over me and I started to break up into smaller pieces of igneous rocks.
The rain fell and fell to the point that it started to push me down the side of the
volcano. More pieces of igneous rocks crashed against me and flowed in the water
down the mountain. We all started to pile on top of each other as we settled at the
bottom of a small river at the foot of the mountain. After many years pass, what
kind of rock will I become? What has to happen before I get turned into a
different kind of rock? What has to happen to me before I turned back to
metamorphic rock??
