22 Windows 7 for End Users: Works the Way You Want Improved Security Windows Filtering Platform The Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) in Windows 7 improves security and gives you more choices with respect to security software. If you want to use a third-party firewall, its vendor can build on the core capabilities of Windows Firewall to add custom features. Third-party products also can selectively turn parts of the Windows Firewall on or off, enabling you to choose which software firewall you want to use and have it coexist with Windows Firewall. Parental Controls Windows 7 Parental Controls offer parents greater peace of mind and confidence in their ability to manage what their kids can do on the computer. Parents can specify which computer games their children can play and which applications they can use, and can set specific times when children can use the computer to ensure that they aren’t playing games when they should be doing their homework. Windows Live Family Safety (discussed later in this guide) works alongside Parental Controls to help keep kids safe on the Web by filtering inappropriate Web sites and providing parents with a report on their kids’ activities on the PC.
