Railsplitters Stop Dowling
Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines

1975 Des Moines Lincoln overcame a 2-for-16 effort from the floor in the first quarter to oust 1979
West Des Moines Dowling, 55-44 in the Iowa Greats Basketball Tournament opener last night.
The Railsplitters forced huge foul trouble on the Maroons' frontline as Dowling forwards John Frost,
John Quinn, and Bob Hansen each picked-up three fouls in the first half.
The game was tied at 18 after 16-minutes before Lincoln started to pull away behind Mark Long's
outside shooting and 6' 6 Chris Kern's inside presence.
At 45-37 Lincoln in the fourth, Dowling scored seven-unanswered points with Hansen and Quinn
on the bench having fouled out to make it a 45-44 game.
Lincoln regrouped as Craig Hall scored on a rebound as did Ron Lemons to help the Railsplitters
finish the game with a 10-0 run to advance to the Round-of-16.

Roosevelt Eliminates Hoover
Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines

Trailing 59-57, 2006 Des Moines Hoover committed a turnover with :24.3 seconds left, leading to
their 63-59 loss to the 1965 Des Moines Roosevelt Roughriders from Wells Fargo Arena.
With the score tied at 35 in the third, Roosevelt ran-off 11 straight points to take command,
before the Huskies fought-back to within 48-47 in the fourth.
Later in the final quarter, RHS's Don Sears converted a four-point play after he was fouled making
a three-pointer from the right corner to push the Riders' lead to 59-51 with just under two-
minutes left.
Hoover's Ray Miller sandwiched two baskets around two Damir Dzafic free throws as
Roosevelt committed two-turnovers and missed a free throw, allowing the Huskies to pull to within
59-57 with 1:04 showing.
Roosevelt's Ron Shirk was whistled for travelling, giving the Huskies the ball with :54.5 left.
Hoover looked to get the tying basket, twice calling timeouts to set their offense. Finally,
an errant pass intended for DeAnthony Zanders crossed the midcourt line, creating an over-and-
back turnover with :24.3 to go.
The Roughriders' Roger Lovejoy was fouled and sank both free throws for a 61-57 advantage.
A layup by Zanders with :06.9 seconds remaining made it 61-59.
Lovejoy was fouled, and again hit both charities for the 63-59 final.

Assumption Blasts Bettendorf
i wireless Center, Moline, IL

The favored 2005 Bettendorf Bulldogs were overpowered by a feisty 1982 Davenport
Assumption squad, 63-43 last night from Moline.
It wasn't for lack of effort by Bettendorf as they dominated the boards, 45-30.
But a 19-3 turnover disadvantage, plus 34% shooting from the field were the Bulldogs'
undoing in the shocking blowout.
The Knights of Assumption, normally a deliberate offensive squad, put up 63-shots and
tallied 22-assists as they sliced through the Bettendorf defense for numerous layups.
The Bulldogs never got closer than 11-points in the second half.

1970 Imps Cruise Past 1950s
i wireless Center, Moline, IL

Which Davenport Central team is best?
For two quarters and a couple of minutes, that question remained unanswered.
Then the 1970 Blue Devils turned a 31-29 game into a blowout as they went on
a 20-2 run to trounce their 1950 siblings, 66-45 last night from Moline.
A scorching first quarter by the '70s saw them hit 9-of-12 from the field including
3-for-4 from behind the arc and take a 24-12 advantage.
The 1950s chipped away and pulled as close as the 31-29 count early in the third.
The 1970s turned the tide by dominating the boards, outrebounding the '50s
47-28 for the game.

Blue Devils Trip Assumption
i wireless Center, Moline, IL

Dana Arp's steal and basket with :21.8 seconds left, provided the winning points in 1970
Davenport Central's, 44-43 victory over 1982 Davenport Assumption in last night's Southeast
Regional Final.
Both teams used deliberate offenses and played physical defense throughout.
Matt McGowan, who hit his first seven shots from the field, scored early in the fourth to
give the Knights a 36-35 advantage.
Later in the quarter, Assumption's Steve Dockery canned a triple to extend the Knights'
lead to 43-39 with 1:25 remaining.
A hoop by Ron Dengler and a free throw from Rick Atzen pulled Central to within one at
43-42 with :38.1 seconds to go.
Arp read a pass from Assumption's Bill Bush, who had replaced McGowan after he
committed his fifth foul with under a minute left, then beat Brice McPherson to the basket
for a layup and the one-point lead for Central.
After a timeout, Assumption setup their final possession, trying to free Mike Daniel or
Dean Tandeski. Central's offense smothered both options, leaving McPherson to attempt a
20-footer from the top of the key with three-seconds left.
The shot bounded high off the front of the rim and out as the Blue Devils escaped with the
one-point win.

1966 Marshalltown Ousts 1956s
Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines

In a contest where both squads shot below 36% from the floor, the 1966 Marshalltown
Bobcats defeated the 1956 Bobcats, 64-59 from Wells Fargo Arena yesterday.
With the score tied at 52 three-minutes into the fourth, 1966 went on a mild 6-0 run,
but it was enough to wrest control from the 1955s and finish with the five-point
victory.
Contributing heavily to the win were Steve Cooper and Frank Buchan who combined
for 17 of the 1966's, 24-offensive rebounds for the game.

Dodgers Thump Newton
Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines

1988 Fort Dodge outscored 1963 Newton 22-5 in the first quarter as the Dodgers romped to
a 77-64 win over the Cardinals.
Fort Dodge hit only 7-of-20 shots from the field in the first frame, but they were 8-for-10 from
the line while holding Newton to 2-for-15 from the floor and not allowing a single free throw attempt.
In the third, Newton closed to within 52-38, but a 14-2 run by the Dodgers made the margin too
much to overcome for the Cards.
The big-man battle between the Dodgers' Wade Lookingbill (19-points, 21-rebounds) and Newton's
Tom Altemeier (26-points, 20-rebounds) was as good as advertised.
  Dodge's Jay Goodman (22-points and 7-assists) and Marc Carlson (19-points and 11-rebounds)
contributed to the win.

Deadeye Bobcats Oust Fort Dodge
Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines

   Three-point shooting and free throws.
Most people knew about the 1966 Marshalltown Bobcats' ability at the line. Not having
played with the three-pointer in '66, there was a question about how they would perform
with the new feature.
Game one against 1955 Marshalltown saw them hit only 2-of-11 from behind the arc. In
yesterday's second half against 1988 Fort Dodge, the Bobcats connected on 6-for-9 triples,
helping them overcome a 38-29 deficit to knock-off the Dodgers, 79-71.
Trailing by that 38-29 score, Marshalltown's next 12-points came on four three-pointers
to grab a 41-40 advantage with just over four-minutes remaining in the third.
The long-range bombs atrophied the Dodger defense, leaving Fort Dodge vulnerable in
every area of the court. So much so that Marshalltown finished shooting 63.4 % from the
floor for the game.
With a 55-49 advantage entering the fourth, the Bobcats began stalling, forcing the
Dodgers to foul. Marshalltown finished the game with a respectable 20-of-31 from the
stripe as they eliminate a strong contender for the title with the eight-point win.

2003 East is the Beast
McLeod Center, Cedar Falls

2003 East High School of Waterloo shot 49.1% from the floor and forced 16, 1990
East turnovers as they defeated the elder Trojans, 62-54 from Cedar Falls yesterday.
2003 took advantage of 1990's sloppy ball-handling, converting the 16 miscues into
23-fast break points.
Late in the third, 2003's lead ballooned to 47-34, but 1990 ran-off seven consecutive
points to end the third down by six.
Led by Mike Henderson and Carlton Reed, the 2003s regrouped and closed out the
victory with an eight-point win.

Mohawks Race Past Wahlert
McLeod Center, Cedar Falls

1997 Mason City's Dean Oliver scored 32-points and dished-out eight-assists to lead his Mohawks
over 1980 Dubuque Wahlert, 81-71 in last night's contest from Cedar Falls.
Mason City took the lead for good early in the first and bolted to a 20-11 advantage after eight-minutes.
Despite tremendous perimeter shooting by the Golden Eagles' Tim Burbach and Jeff Valentine,
the Mohawks were able to maintain a secure distance over Wahlert.
Late in the fourth, the Eagles pulled to within six at 75-69, but Mason City closed-out the victory
with free throws and now advance to take on 2003 East High School from Waterloo.

East Stops Mohawks
McLeod Center, Cedar Falls

2003 Waterloo East forced 17-turnovers and grabbed 23-offensive rebounds, then held-off a late
charge in their 63-58 victory over 1997 Mason City.
Despite missing their first eight shots from the floor, the aggressive Trojans benefitted greatly
from the officials allowing physical play.
They forced seven-turnovers in the first half while being whistled for only four-fouls as they built
a 28-20 advantage after 16-minutes.
The lead expanded to as much a 16-points in the fourth as East continued to harass Mohawk
ball-handlers and crash the boards.
An Achilles' heel was exposed late as the Trojans, and more specifically Breian Micou, struggled
to convert free throws.
Three successive trips late in the fourth produced three, three-pointers (two from Dean Oliver,
one from Mike Peterson) and pulled the Mohawks to within 61-57 with :34.6 seconds to go.
Another missed free throw by East led to a foul that put Mason City's Daren Mairs on the free
throw line still down by four.
He made the first, but missed the second and Oliver fouled (his fifth) to put East's Jerry
Bennett on the stripe with the score 61-58 and only :27.4 seconds remaining.
Bennett split the pair, MC's Ben Logan missed a triple, then Micou split a pair to make the
score 63-58 with :08.9 seconds to go.
The Mohawks' Mike Peterson missed on a three and East had the victory.
The Trojans' Milan Moses finished with 13-points, 12-rebounds, six-assists and four-steals.
Mason City's Brant Harriman registered five-blocks

Sioux Center Trounces Tornadoes
Gateway Arena, Sioux City

  Going up against 1968 Storm Lake's frontline which stood 6' 10, 6' 8, and 6' 6, the 1959
Sioux Center Indians ran the Tornadoes off of the court in an 81-62 blowout from Gateway
Arena yesterday.
SC efficiently and effectively took the ball right at the taller Storm Lake team. How
efficient and effective? The Tornadoes did not register a single blocked shot.
The Indians led 40-33 at halftime, but Storm Lake tied the game at 41 with 6:16 left in the
third.
Sioux Center then scored 26 of the next 30 points to put the contest out of reach.
The Indians also did a great job of cutting-off the passing lanes and disrupting the Tornado
offense in general, forcing 21-turnovers.

East Nips West at the Buzzer
Gateway Arena, Sioux City

2002 Sioux City East's Landon Scott drained a left-wing triple at the buzzer, to catapult
the Black Raiders to a 58-55 victory over 1999 Sioux City West.
It was a fiercely contested game with neither team gaining an advantage larger than
six-points.
That six-point advantage by the Black Raiders, came late in the third quarter when
leading 37-36, Jason Keck scored while being intentionally fouled. He hit the free throw,
then Ben Jacobson was fouled, converting both his tosses for a 42-36 game.
The Wolverines passed East at 47-46 in the fourth.
Later in the quarter, Slaven Markovic hit two free throws to tie the score at 53-all with
:41.6 seconds remaining.
Jacobson hit a seven-foot leaner to give the Raiders a 55-53 advantage with :31 seconds
to go.
West's Kirk Hinrich exploded up the court and scored on a layup with :23.1 left, tying
the game at 55.
After a Wolverine timeout, East broke West's pressure then called a timeout of their own
with :15.9 seconds on the clock.
The Raiders gave it to Jacobson on the right-wing. He drove to the lane and was
cutoff by a collapsing defender, forcing him to kick the ball to Scott on the left.
The 6' 3 junior caught the pass and released the game-winning shot with under a second
left, sending the Black Raiders to a matchup with 1959 Sioux Center.

Warriors Chop Sioux City East
Gateway Arena, Sioux City

1959 Sioux Center outscored 2002 Sioux City East, 41-24 in the second and third quarters to key their
71-66 victory over the Black Raiders in the West Regional final last night.
Sioux Center led 33-30 at the start of the third, then scored the first eight-points of the quarter to
build a 41-30 advantage.
The Indians continued their onslaught as they finished the third hitting 10-of-13 from the floor and
taking a comfortable 56-44 lead into the fourth.
East's star-forward Ben Jacobson was whistled for a charging foul (his fifth) 1:55 into the fourth and
the Black Raiders trailing 58-48.
Jacobson's teammate Landon Scott started a run with back-to-back three-pointers for East in what
would become a 10-0 outburst, tying the game at 58 with just over two and a half minutes remaining.
Raider center Lewis DeJong also fouled out, leaving East depleted on the frontline. It came back to
haunt them as Indian forward Howard Beernink scored on an offensive rebound to put SC up 66-63
with :41 seconds left.
A missed three and a turnover by East led to three Sioux Center free throws to push the lead to
69-63 with :19.1 to go.
Scott came through with another triple to make it 69-66 with :12.0 seconds on the clock.
Doug Zylstra sank two free throws for the Indians with :08.6 seconds left to cap-off the 71-66 victory

1976 Little Cyclones Prevail
Hilton Coliseum, Ames

1976 Ames outscored the 1991 Little Cyclones, 36-24 in the second half to emerge with a
61-49 victory in front of a packed house in Hilton Coliseum.
The inside presence of Chuck Harmison and Matt Burgason helped the 1976s to pull away
in the second half.
1991 Ames opened the game with a 16-7 run, but shoddy ball-handling (16-turnovers)
contributed to their demise.
Bob Klingseis of the '76s played solid defense on '91 star Fred Hoiberg, although "The Mayor"
still canned 21-points.

Barnes Leads 2010 Over 1973s
Hilton Coliseum, Ames

Harrison Barnes, 2010 National Player of the Year, scored 21-points, grabbed ten-rebounds,
and dealt five-assists as his Little Cyclones stopped the 1973 Little Cyclones, 65-54 last
night from Hilton Coliseum.
2010 opened with an 18-8 first quarter, saw that lead trimmed to 29-23 in the second, then
registered the final ten-points before halftime to take a 39-23 lead into the locker-room.
Shaking off a 13-turnover effort in the first half, the 1973s fought back to cut the deficit to
45-41 in the third.
The 2010s used superior rebounding and 8-for-11 free throw shooting down the stretch
to pull away and gain the double-digit victory.

Misses Abound as 1976 Ames Perseveres
Hilton Coliseum, Ames

In as ugly a game as you will see, 1976 Ames overcame 23-missed free throws by holding 2010
Ames to 27.9% shooting from the floor in the elder Little Cyclones, 57-49 mild upset over the
Harrison Barnes-led Little Cyclones.
1976 shot 48.1% from the field and forced eight-turnovers in the first half as they built a 34-24
halftime lead.
The 2010s cut the deficit to three at 38-35 in the third quarter, but couldn't get closer as they finished
an abysmal 7-for-34 from the floor in the second half including 1-of-15 from three-point range.
The 1976's lead grew to 52-37 in the fourth, but horrendous free throw shooting down the stretch,
allowed 2010 Ames to hang close before falling by eight.

Printy's Shot Eliminates 1983s
Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa City

Jordan Printy sank a 22-foot, three-point shot at the buzzer to give the 2007 Linn-Mar Lions a dramatic
57-55 victory over 1983 Linn-Mar.
Printy scorched the nets in the first quarter with 3-for-3 shooting from behind the arc as the 2007s held
a one-point advantage after one.
The 2007s opened the second quarter with a 9-0 burst, but Todd Lumsden and Scott Anderson's play,
plus unexpected points from guard Brad DeBrower, helped the 1983s tie it at 30, then take a 48-40
lead late in the third.
Beau Bunce drained a triple at the third quarter buzzer to cut the 2007's deficit to 48-43.
With under two-minutes left, 1983 led 53-52, but 2007's Zach Bohannon and Printy missed shots,
keeping the margin at one.
Anderson hit a baseline shot to extend the '83's lead to 55-52, but 2007's Alex Weldon sank two free-throws
for a 55-54 score with :26.4 seconds remaining.
Weldon fouled-out, putting 1983's Scott Underwood at the line for a one-and-one with :19.4 to go.
Underwood missed the first, but 2007 turned the ball over with a pass out of bounds.
1983's John Anderson was fouled with :10.9 left for a one-and-one chance.
He also missed the front end.
2007 rebounded and pushed the ball up-court before calling timeout with :05.6 seconds showing.
Printy took the inbound pass near midcourt, drove to his left, then fired over DeBrower at the top of the
key. The ball nestled through the hoop as the buzzer sounded, sending the '07s to round two.

Lions Bust Iowa City High
Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa City

Trailing 31-29 entering the fourth, 2007 Marion Linn-Mar outscored 2008 Iowa City
15-7 in the final quarter to defeat the Little Hawks, 44-38 from Carver-Hawkeye Arena last
night.
Leading 22-17 in the third, Linn-Mar watched Iowa City rally with a 12-1 run to take a
29-23 advantage.
In the fourth, the Lions took the lead behind stellar guard-play from Jordan Printy and
Grant Gibbs.
Up 38-35 with a minute and a half left, Gibbs got loose for a potential layup, but was
fouled hard by IC's Malcolm Moore. The officials whistled the Little Hawk center for an
intentional foul, giving Gibbs two free throws plus possession to Linn-Mar.
Gibbs sank both tosses for a 40-35 score, but the Lions' Beau Bunce missed a free
throw, giving the ball back to Iowa City.
Matt Gatens missed a triple for the Little Hawks, then L-M's Nate Hutcheson scored
to put the Lions ahead 42-35 with :41.6 seconds remaining.
John Lickliter knocked-down a three for the Hawks to make it 42-38 with :29.1 seconds
left.
Bunce missed two free throws, giving Iowa City a chance to draw closer, but Gatens
missed a three and Gibbs sank two charity tosses with :09.0 seconds to go for
a 44-38 lead, clinching the Lions' victory.

J-Hawks Pound Regis
U.S. Cellular Center, Cedar Rapids

1967 Cedar Rapids Jefferson put on an impressive display of offense and defense as they
routed a fired-up 1962 Regis team, 68-50 from the U.S. Cellular Center.
Regis stayed close for 2-1/2 quarters before foul trouble and careless ball-handling (18-
turnovers) did the Royals in.
  Jeff's 6' 7 pivot-man Larry Baker played a big-role in the romp as he powered in 22-points
and gathered 15-boards for the J-Hawks who outscored Regis in every quarter.

Kennedy Ousts Washington in Overtime
U.S. Cellular Center, Cedar Rapids

1984 Cedar Rapids Kennedy survived a late free throw attempt in regulation, then outscored 1969
Cedar Rapids Washington 12-7 in overtime for a 53-48 victory to advance to the Regional Final
versus 1967 Jefferson.
It was a tight contest throughout.
With the score knotted at 41, Washington was called for travelling, giving the ball to Kennedy with
:34.9 seconds to go in the game.
The Kennedy Cougars went to center Al Lorenzen, but his 14-foot jumper was off. Teammate Jeff
Hrubes gathered the offensive rebound but missed as well with Washington getting the board.
After a timeout with :13.5 seconds remaining, the Warriors setup for the winning shot.
Kennedy's Steve Monk was whistled for a reach-in foul against Kyle Skogman with :06.0 seconds
left, giving the Washington guard a one-and-one free throw chance.
Skogman, normally a reliable shooter from the stripe, had his first toss rim-out. Monk was able to
fire-up a desperation 45-footer that was off, sending the game into overtime tied at 41.
In the extra session, the Cougars led 49-46 but Hrubes missed a free throw, giving Washington the
ball with :46 seconds remaining.
WHS's Bill Carrithers drove to the basket, was cutoff, then lost the ball out of bounds with :28.0
seconds on the clock.
Kennedy's Tim Batterson sank four free throws the rest of the way to give the Cougars the five-point
victory.

Kennedy's First Three…Monumental
U.S. Cellular Center, Cedar Rapids

1984 Cedar Rapids Kennedy, who went 0-for-6 from three-point range in their overtime win
over 1969 Cedar Rapids Washington in round one, found themselves in another overtime tussle
with 1967 Jefferson last night.
For the first 35-minutes, 59-seconds, Kennedy was 0-for-7 from behind the arc. Cougar forward
Tim Batterson changed that in the final second of the first extra session.
With the score tied at 70-70, it was Jefferson who had the ball with :22 seconds left and a chance
at victory.
The J-Hawks ran the clock down, then Jefferson forward Larry Lawrence let a 20-foot triple fly from
the right-wing with :06 seconds remaining.
It was off and Kennedy's Jeff Hrubes grabbed the rebound and passed to Batterson.
  The 6' 3 senior launched a 55-foot, desperation heave.
The ball swished through the hoop as the buzzer sounded, sending the Green and Gold into a
frenzy with a stunning, 73-70 victory over the powerful J-Hawks.
Even before Batterson's shot, the two teams were involved in the most hotly contested game of the
tournament as both schools battled for control.
Each team had a key player in foul trouble. For Kennedy it was 6' 8 center Al Lorenzen; Jefferson's
6' 0 guard BJ Trickey fouled out early in the fourth with zero-points.
The Cougars seemed to put the game away with an 8-0 run in the fourth that gave them a 56-49
advantage.
The J-Hawks of Jefferson stormed back.
Hrubes sank two free throws with :16.1 seconds to go to extend Kennedy's lead to 58-55.
Jefferson's Bob Burgin attempted a three to tie but missed.
The J-Hawks, as they had done all evening, grabbed the offensive rebound; one of an incredible
26-offensive boards tallied by Jefferson.
It was center Larry Baker who hauled it in, then kicked the ball out to Lawrence who drained
a triple with :05 seconds left, tying the score at 58 and sending the game to overtime.
Jefferson was able to forge a 68-64 lead, but Kennedy scored six-straight to make it 70-68,
Cougars.
A bucket by Baker tied it, then Kennedy's Scott Tate missed a short jumper with Jefferson
rebounding and calling timeout with :22.4 seconds remaining.
That's when the final previously described events transpired, sending the Kennedy Cougars to
the next round.
Kennedy is now 1-for-14 from three-point range for the tournament…they'll gladly take the one.

                      Lincoln Survives Blue Devils
1975 Des Moines Lincoln outscored 1970 Davenport Central, 16-9 in the fourth quarter
and emerged with a 62-57 victory over the Imps in the opening quarterfinal contest.
It was a great game played in front of a huge throng of Iowa hoop fans. Neither team
had a lead bigger than six-points throughout.
Down the stretch, fatigue appeared to set-in on the Blue Devils as they were 0-for-6
from behind the arc in the fourth and missed a number of shots in the paint.
One of the misses came from guard Dave Thomason who, with Central trailing 58-57,
drove through the Lincoln defense but had his layup roll out.
That led to a Railsplitter fast-break with junior Dennis Livingston scoring and getting
fouled by Ron Dengler with :43.1 seconds left in the game.
Livingston missed the free throw, keeping the Lincoln lead at 60-57.
After a Central timeout, they setup for a quick two or a possible three point shot to
tie it. One of the problems for the Blue Devils was that the Railsplitters had two fouls
to give before Central got to the bonus.
The Blue Devils worked the ball around before Ken Stringer launched a triple try from
the right corner with :23 seconds remaining.
It was long and Lincoln grabbed the rebound, then John Thorup was fouled, giving the
Railsplitters two free throws with :16.0 seconds to go.
Thorup sank both tosses for a 62-57 score.
Thomason attempted a three, but was off.
Lincoln's Chris Kern secured the ball and outletted to Mark Long who exhausted the
time, giving the Railsplitters the five-point win and a ducat to the semifinals.

                       Trojans Overwhelm Marshalltown
2003 East High of Waterloo knew the strengths of yesterday's foe: 1966 Marshalltown.
The '66 Bobcats have outside gunners galore and spectacular free throw shooting.
They used both exceptionally well in their first two games to emerge from the Central
                       Region.
The Trojans response: hold Marshalltown to a paltry 15.8% (3-for-19) from three-point
range and not allow a single free throw from the Bobcats, despite playing a press defense
                       for 32-minutes.
Coach Steve McGraw's East team forged a slim 30-27 lead at halftime, but opened the
third by scoring the first nine-points of the quarter.
Gritty Marshalltown stayed close, pulling to within six (43-37) heading into the final
                       frame.
East turned-up their defense as MHS connected on only 2-of-12 three-pointers in the
fourth, while the team from Waterloo shredded the Bobcat defense with it's hoard of
                       penetrators.
The Trojans get 1975 Des Moines Lincoln in tonight's first semifinal.

                      Ames Ousts Sioux Center
1976 Ames' center Chuck Harmison used his 6' 8 frame to score 28-points and grab
20-rebounds as he led the Little Cyclones to a 65-61 victory over the scrappy 1959 Sioux
                      Center Indians.
Harmison took advantage of his superior height (he is five-inches taller than anybody on
the Indians) early on as he poured in 12 first quarter points on 6-of-7 shooting.
Sioux Center's swarming defense kept them in the game and as Ames began to miss,
the Indians found themselves with a 42-37 lead in the third.
The Little Cyclones climbed back as Harmison started to dominate again after suffering
                      a midgame lull.
With under two-minutes left in the fourth, Ames led 61-54. SC's Leon Schimmel scored
twice to cut the deficit to 61-58 with 1:06 remaining.
SC retrieved the ball on a Little Cyclone turnover, but star-forward Howard Beernink
missed the front end of a one-and-one with :45.4 seconds to go.
Ames rebounded and eventually Harmison scored inside to put the Cyclones up
63-58 with :28.6 seconds on the clock.
The Indians' Wilbur Sandbulte rushed down the court and drained a triple with :20.4
seconds left to get SC to within 63-61.
Ames' Matt Burgason was fouled after a timeout for a one-and-one.
Burgason made the first, missed the second, but Harmison snared the Little Cyclones'
22nd offensive rebound and was fouled with :16.3 seconds to go.
Up 64-61, Harmison missed both free throws, giving Sioux Center a chance to tie with
                      a three.
Eschewing a timeout, the Indians' looked for guard Leon Schimmel to take the
potential tying shot. His jumper from the top of the key was off to the left and Harmison
gathered in his 20th rebound before being fouled with :3.7 seconds remaining.
Harmison sank the first of the one-and-one to clinch the four-point win for Ames and
                      a trip to the semifinals.

Battle of the Cats: Cougars Roll
1984 Cedar Rapids Kennedy shot 54.3% from the floor, built a 40-19 lead, then withstood
a late rally by 2007 Marion Linn-Mar to defeat the Lions 65-55 and advance to the semifinals.
Cougar center Al Lorenzen was unstoppable early as he registered 15, first quarter
points while Linn-Mar shot themselves in the foot with six-turnovers as Kennedy jumped to
                      a 25-12 lead after eight-minutes.
Down 40-19 late in the second, the Lions scored 13-consecutive points at the end of the
second and start of the third to pull to within eight at 40-32.
Kennedy stopped the siege, but midway through the fourth, Linn-Mar had the deficit down
to five at 48-43 with 4:35 to go.
That would be as close as the Lions would get.
Kennedy's defense held Linn-Mar to 37.3% from the floor for the contest, then the
Cougars hit their free throws down the stretch to pull away and setup a battle with 1976
                      Ames in the semifinals.

                      Railsplitters Zap East
1975 Des Moines Lincoln used a 58-32 rebounding advantage to help them overcome a
five-point halftime deficit and defeat 2003 East High School, 63-57 in the first semifinal from
                      a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena last night.
The Officials' whistle also played a big part in the outcome as the teams combined to
commit 49-fouls and shoot 62-free throws.
The turning point came in the third quarter when Waterloo East struggled to make baskets,
hitting only 2-of-12 shots from the floor and scoring a paltry four-points.
The Railsplitters went on a 21-6 run from halftime into the fourth quarter as they built a
                      50-40 advantage.
Despite missing 19-free throw attempts, Lincoln's defensive rebounding dominance (they
held East to a pedestrian six-offensive rebounds) allow them to advance to the title game.

                      Cougars Clamp Ames
After winning their first two playoff contests in overtime, the 1984 Cedar Rapids Kennedy
Cougars will play for the All-Time Iowa Basketball crown after putting on a defensive clinic in
their 52-40 victory over 1976 Ames.
Their first overtime win came after 1969 Cedar Rapids Washington missed what would have
been the go ahead free throw with six-seconds left.
Three victories later, the 22-3 Cougars will battle undefeated 1975 Des Moines Lincoln
                      tonight from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
To call three-loss Kennedy a Cinderella or underdog is doing them a disservice. While their
record isn't as impressive as their zero-loss counterparts, these Cougars have toughness
and a great player in 6' 8 Al Lorenzen.
Last night Lorenzen went head-to-head with 6' 8 Chuck Harmison and tallied 28-points
with 11-rebounds. Harmison was solid, scoring 13-points on 15-boards.
Kennedy throughout, contested Little Cyclone shots and cutoff passing lanes as they
forged a 38-29 lead heading into the fourth.
The Cougars opened the final quarter with a 7-0 run to take a commanding 45-29
                      advantage.
Ames was able to cut the deficit to seven at 47-40, but Kennedy closed with the
                      final five-points of the contest.

Kennedy Stuns Lincoln for the Crown
With 1975 Des Moines Lincoln leading 56-46 early in the fourth, the Railsplitter faithful
anticipated the remaining 7:43 of game-time to be their coronation to the All-Time Iowa
                      championship.
Instead, 1984 Cedar Rapids Kennedy went on an incredible 18-0 run to overtake
Lincoln and capture a 72-66 victory, claiming the Iowa Greats title.
For the first three quarters, Lincoln's up-tempo offense and pressure defense befuddled
the Cougars as they built the ten-point advantage while forcing 16-turnovers.
Kennedy tied the game at 56 after Al Lorenzen scored and was fouled, converting the
                      free throw with 4:02 left.
The next two Cougar possessions saw Jeff Hrubes convert a three-point play, then
Lorenzen drain a three to put Kennedy ahead 62-56. Tim Batterson finished the 18-point
outburst with a short jumper from the left baseline.
Lincoln turned the ball over seven times in the fourth quarter to contribute to their
own demise.
Late in the fourth, Mark Long sank a triple for Lincoln to cut the deficit to 67-63 with
:50 seconds remaining.
Batterson broke free for a layup, but John Thorup countered with a three for the
Railsplitters to make it 69-66 with :36.1 seconds to go.
After a timeout, Lincoln put Tom Mercer on the line and he proceeded to hit one-of-two
tosses to make it 70-66 with :30.6 on the clock.
Long tried a three, missed, and the rebound was knocked out of bounds, giving
Kennedy possession with :17.2 seconds remaining.
The Cougars ran off eight-seconds before Batterson was fouled. He knocked down both
free throws for a 72-66 lead.
Thorup missed a three for Lincoln and the 1984 Kennedy Cougars had their championship.
